Streamer to kill the big boys for under $250

Hi Amir,

I actually tried but he can be rather temperamental, he seems to go after anyone who may question of disagree with his narrow perspective of audio.
The list of people who do that is longer than I can count :). If you don't want to cut him a slack for his sake, do it for mine. I need some sleep to go and see the rest of the show and document it. Let me go do that in peace and not worry about you two going after teach other.

It's funny how there's never any conflict's when I have discussions with knowledgeable engineers. Only smooth flowing conversations. Nice guys like you, Northstar (Bob) Spaz, bibo1, Lateboomer, Madfloyd, Phelonious Ponk, FrantzM, Kal Rubinson, Bmoura, Astrotoy, Geardaddy, DaveC, ESLdude etc never have any conflict with either.

oh no mike no another admirer that poses a danger to your home network( better keep those web cams covered m8). oh and this one is serenading you too... geezzz.

Yes a have a few stalkers. Must be the good looks.

Hi guys,

I'm not sure if I mentioned this earlier, but please make sure your router or switch is a gigabit minimum. Most are nowadays, but some people may have old 100mbit switches laying around they will try to use. Also never daisy chain multiple routers/switches together between server and streamer. Connect the streamer to the same router/switch as the server is on. And if not using the fiber converters, the length and quality of the Ethernet cable has an impact. Better to use fiber if going long distances. Better to use fiber in all situations for that matter.

Thanks

He actually gets allot of slack. Hopefully one day people will learn that everything in this world needs balance. The thought that new technology is always better is foolish. As people grow most will eventually realize this, though sadly some never do.

As we travel this journey through life we learn that nothing is as good, or as bad as are they are made out to be. There is always a middle ground, a common sense level that hopefully we will gravitate to. The latest and the greatest is always what manufacturers will tell us about, but really is this always the best?

This is why many of us are able to successfully blend older technology with the present technology to reach the goal of "our" musical bliss. This is what really matters, not what someone tells us, but what makes us happy.

In order to be successful he should try to realize that he's dealing with people, not inanimate objects. It's much easier to pick up and physically move an inanimate object, people not so much.

Also when speaking of amazing new technology, we often are playing recordings made with "ancient technology." This actually becomes even funnier when one thinks how some will wax poetic about the latest digital magic box while they are listening to great recordings that were made in the Stone Age.

Regards
Bob

Okay, start your own thread talking about the wonders of old technology. My threads are obviously not for you, so I'm not sure why you spend 100% of your time on WBF on my threads only.

all sensible stuff bob, thanks.
the world infact depends on chaos, the idea nature is balanced is a myth. all life is in a constant state of chaotic change, though humans like too seek comfort in thier various delousions, one being the idea of balance. so you can pop about looking for balance if thats what you need and indeed may well feel all the better for it, just dont go thinking its any more than a pleasent delousion which only exsists within the confines of the human mind.

toodle pop:)

Very true...

Give it a rest Bob. Your pride has obviously been wounded. Time to move on.

Staying on your meds will dampen that chaos and lessen the frothing, diversionary banter springing forth said chaos....;)

thanks geardaddy for sharing your hard fort for wisdom on some of the issues surounding living with mental illness

all hail the voice of expirence;)

Geardaddy is one of the good guys around here. He's trying to understand how to put together the ultimate system for this needs. But just like most audio enthusiasts find, it's hard to weed through all of the BS, and simply find what will actually provide the real world results he's trying to obtain. Well fortunately, I'm on a mission to help people find these solutions. My approach may be unconventional, but that's what makes it good.

Conventional is boring, and being politically correct usually means filling peoples heads with BS. I don't like it when people do this to me, so why should I expect others to appreciate the same in return? On the downside, folks with above average sensitively levels, or lower than average self confidence, may find my approach a bit extreme. but when I weigh the pros and cons, I feel I'm doing the right thing.:)

You are Blizz ! Keep up the good work in provoking reactions which never fail to entertain!
Cheers,
Detlof

Thanks Detlof! You have been officially added to the good guy list :)

Hi guys,

I just realized that I really should have been considering the fact that this unit does have other use applications other than just a fixture on your high end audio rack. It does have a Mini PCI-E slot on the board. And in that slot you could always install a very fast dual band AC wifi card.

I have done it before and works great. However it does add noise. So where you would use it is in portable locations that you don't want to run wires to. It still sounds excellent, after all most of the mainstream several thousand dollar streamers have the same wifi cards built in them already. So at worst, it would just take the noise levels up to where they are at. It's super long range too as it's AC. Antenna is already built into the case and ready to go.

So just think, out in the backyard or something. You could stream Roon/Tidal, even upsample to DSD, wirelessly, and control with the iPad. Or anywhere for that matter. You will have the full music collection off your main server, as well as Tidal, wherever you plunk it down. Takes a second to switch zones on the Roon app. And theres no limit to the amount of zones. Also 1 image is good for as many zones as you want. You don't need to buy another copy for each unit. It would seem crazy if you were paying $1-$5K per unit, and getting 1 for each room. But when they are this cheap, you can put one in every room for less than the price of most commercial unit's of equal quality.

So something to consider anyways. No need for all the fancy upgrades either if it's just out by the campfire in the back yard or something. Around the hot tub.

Hi Mike

Please don't take my question as a provocation because I don't have enough technical knowledge but can't help wondering...
Is your solution not almost obsolete after HQPlayer does offer turn-key images for rpi, rpi2, cubox and some more as HQPlayer NAA?

HQplayer has offered those images for a couple years now. Try them out on that hardware, and compare for sound with this unit. Also no airplay support, but might not matter for some. The full Audiolinux functionality is also on my image. It's just bypassed. But could be enabled. Squeezebox, MPD and jriver are all on my image. But I don't want to encourage people to use them as they don't sound as good. And as I mentioned earlier, I will send out free updates, as I update my image. I will keep a master image. I always have my eyes peeled on the latest software based audio tweak. So if I find a new and better way to do things, I'll update the image, and send everyone a download link. They will simply just have to copy it over the previous one and done.

Hi Mike

Thanks for your answer.
Will there at some point also be new hardware?
Here in Switzerland, I wasn't able to find the bespoke NUC model anymore...

Order it from the US Amazon site, like I did. I live close to Genf.

Hi guys,

For more advanced users with a lot of time on their hands, and don't require AirPlay, setup support, or ongoing support, a fellow I recommended the NUC 3815 to figured out how to install the HQplayer NAA daemon right into the flash storage chip on the motherboard. Try if you want, but please don't ask me any questions on how to. Please use the guide.
