Taiko Audio SGM Extreme : the Crème de la Crème

Our Totaldac reclocker just shipped back to us from France. It is scheduled to arrive on Tuesday. We will test it straight away though I remain convinced it's just a formality, it's good to get field test confirmation.
Excellent news Emile!! Eagerly awaiting your positive confirmation on pins and needles.

Heartfelt thanks all around to Vincent at totaldac and Emile and the Taiko Team for going the extra mile to jointly address the technical challenges at hyper speed!! Nonpareil customer service!!

That should be awesome. I guess this will be your first use of your d1- twelve with the usb card?

Did you also get the full mk2 upgrade or just the usb power fix?

The full monty! I did use it before with the USB prototype card but that was over 6 months ago before we moved to Oldenzaal. We did some finetuning after and optimised it to USB specifications, but did not end up retest until a few weeks ago.

Meanwhile I came across this today, it appears somebody liked the looks of our card, a dubious honour:

Wow! That makes no sense to me. Are there enough Extremes out there to justify knocking off a fairly inexpensive upgrade?

It shares little electronic design similarities, it's mainly the looks that have been copied.
The greatest form of flattery, imitation!

At least he will not copy your ATX since he does not believe that it can outperform the best LPS
BTW, how do you like your new Kenrick JBLs?

he wasn't smart enough to use copper as a front plate nor a bend in the bottom end as you
Who is this guy and what is this things application? Just curious.

That midrange.....oi!

The 15” bass/mid is a refurbished JBL D130 dating back to 1948. It supposedly has a 104 dB efficiency. Apart from always having lusted after a pair of Kenrick Sound JBL speakers I expect these to be valuable in focusing on “entertainment value”, energy, speed and naturality of the musical performance for future developments.

Those JBL D130 are special and hard to find at less than stratospheric prices. I wanted a pair for my DIY Edgarhorn bass bins but settled for a pair of Alnico magnet ElectroVoice instead. I was able to find mint JBL 375 compression drivers and a pair of 2441 c-horns to try for the midrange. I ended up preferring the 375s.

Beautiful speakers, Emile. I bet they will be lots of fun.

Thank you Steve, indeed I’ve seen prices up to 10K for a mint / matched pair. The E140 is not much better for mint 16 or 32 ohm versions. The Kenricks employ a 075, crossing at 2.8K. Looking forward to their arrival!

Emile hello,

I will not be a regular contributor here, but I want to respond to your measured observations (thank you) about our recently announced card and in doing so deal with points raised in a less measured fashion by some other contributors.

It shares little electronic design similarities

Indeed.

Beyond the USB host controller selection there little in common.

For those that may not easily see the differences:

OAudio RealStream Clock system used.
Two USB ports offering users differing configuration possibilities.
Rear blade user control system.
12 LDOs Vs 6, not that important as and of itself but indicative of different design decisions in many locations.
To accommodate all this I believe the card is somewhat physically larger.

It's mainly the looks that have been copied.

Our philosophy is that form should follow function, What you see is the in house style of all of our other music server components.

Developing these devices to Supreme levels of audio performance takes time. I believe 2000 hours is your figure for the development which I agree with. The cards have therefore been been developed separately in parallel with each other. I certainly don't remember sending you our 3d renders in early autumn last year ;-). We were ready to announce our card in January but decided not to share images until other cards due to be announced had committed to production.

Best regards,

OAudio.
