Taiko Audio SGM Extreme : the Crème de la Crème

PAGE 500 of the amazing Taiko Extreme thread!

Go team Taiko!

That’s awesome. Has to be all time record?
Did CKKeung envision over 3 years and 500 pages on the initial “Creme de la creme” post? Prescient. Can’t imagine the number of detailed, exciting and educational posts integrated by Emile and his team throughout. Major understatement and of course Eurodriver too, tasseat (shoot misspelling the handle) an christian.

Among many, another milestone, that hopefully Team Taiko gets to soak in. And it seems like things are just getting going, again, like the first wave albeit this time with many more extreme users. Contributors on this thread seems to have grown exponentially, a testament to Taiko’s continued sonic success and expansion.

Apologies for going off topic, but previously there were thoughts around producing a Taiko Case for the DIY community. Is that project still active and if so, when could one expect them to be available? Thanks.

Those have been finished however the heatsinks aren’t here yet.

Hip, Hip TAIKO:)

Well, for the internally-mounted network interface card I'd expect that using the Extreme's own top-shelf and very extreme power supply would be hard to beat.

As far as external devices, good question. Also, wondering if the switch and router will accommodate a range of voltages, say 5VDC to 12VDC assuming a user-supplied external power supply is indeed an option. Or if that comes with too many sonic compromises.

I trust Emile to incorporate into his switch and router design the best sound quality decisions and if that means an included power supply, I'm happy with that.

Steve

The network card is powered internally. The router includes a new type of “problem solving” powersupply which we would ideally have for the switch too, however I’m unsure if this will be available in sufficient numbers when the switch launches, in which case we may have to temporarily resort to using an “old fashioned” external DC supply.

Question about power cords for the Extreme.

Several companies (Audioquest, Audience, etc) make 2 types of power cords: high powered (mainly for amps) and source (for source components). The high powered are designed for variable current loads.

Which of these are better suited for the Extreme? Does the Extreme produce a variable current load?

No variable current load but as the Extreme has a 400VA powertransformer high powered will perform better.

I see Emile beat me to it, but I can confirm that when I experimented with power cords for my Extreme the ones that worked best, that is, sounded best top to bottom were those that were designed for high-current loads. I ended up with a Sablon Prince which very narrowly beat out a Shunyata Sigma NR v2. Both sounded excellent and noticeably better than smaller-gauge conductor power cords. Either one would be a good choice and I am sure there are many others out there.

The list is endless....I use all Masterbuilt Ultra in my system so for the Extreme I use the MB Ultra Power cord as well as the MB Ultra USB cable

When I picked Emile's brain 2 1/2 years ago re the Extreme he told me I needed 4 essemtials
1. A very good power cord
2. An unshielded good quality copper Ethernet cable
3. Excellent component isolation
4. A very good USB cable

I followed his advice and haven't changed a thing in that time except adding two LPS ...to my cable modem and one to my router

I must admit that I am eagerly awaiting the new Network card, switch and router, which, together with XDMS, will IMO rival any other server on the market. It'll be interesting how many Extreme users will finally dump Roon and follow the XDMS path . I, for one will. I loved and used faithfully TAS until Emile released the new OS after which I have been using Roon as I eagerly await the release of XDMS

My Extreme was delivered on Thursday. Put an AQ Hurricane Source on it that I wasn’t using. It sounds fine but am looking for recommendations on a high current cord from current owners. What’s everyone using on their Extreme?

Prince by Sablon Audio. Great power cable at a reasonable price and the maker of Sablon cables is a pleasure to do biz with. Auditions for some cables in his lines are possible. End of commercial!
Indeed. I’m using a Sablon Prince as well. I might have gone for the King but that huge plug would have covered two receptacles on my power distribution unit and I have every receptacle in use.

The Shunyate Sigma NR v2 was very close and some day I will have to revisit it since there have been many upgrades to the Extreme since I last tried it — USB card, Extreme OS tweaks, Taiko USB driver, etc.

My Extreme was delivered last night. The SQ was so lively yet so relax. Love it. However lost a lot of my Roon playlist after migrating Roon core from MacBook Pro to Extreme. Any advice? Thanks
Hi Robert, congrats on becoming a new Extreme owner! Migrating the core should not normally result in lost playlists or their contents. Did you follow the recommendations on the following Roon page? https://help.roonlabs.com/portal/en/kb/articles/migration#Preparation

Next to the recommendations above, if you want to stay in the AQ line, you would indeed be better off with purchasing the “High Current” version of the Hurricane.
