Taiko Audio SGM Extreme : the Crème de la Crème

Ok, good to hear! Yes, depending on the HDD's and their interface inside the computer as well as the network interface, network transfer can take a long time with large libraries. I normally just let it run overnight. Happy listening!
Hi Christiaan,

Can you help me figure out why my external HD is not being detected by the Extreme? I have tried the USB ports on the rear, under LAN 1 and LAN 2. Using VNC, I cannot see the HD mounted in Windows...
Thanks

I'm the poster child for what happens when you try to do it all yourself, rather than let Emile and team make it easier for you.

I generally add music to my Extreme's onboard storage by one of two multi-step processes, utilizing the Mac's pull-down menu and selecting either "Network" or "Server", navigating to the Extreme, signing in via the log-in/password, and finally selecting the appropriate folder.

The upside is I can select which folder (directory) I want to add my music to -- DSD, PCM or PGGB -- but the downside is it is a multi-step process and not a one-click drag and drop.

Hi Steve, should you ever get the desire to try and improve your situation yourself, you can permanently mount a network drive so that you don't need to connect every time. In Windows, it's called exactly that, and it's a well-known method among IT admins. Anyway, what you need is the Mac method. It occurred to me that I never tried mounting a network drive on Mac but Googling it, it seems it is possible also with Mac OS. Here is a link, in case I triggered your curiosity :) https://www.imore.com/how-automatically-mount-network-drives-macos

Thank you, Christiaan. I'll give this a try later in the day and report back. It's always good to learn new ways of doing things.

Hi Surge1, I suspect your external HDD is formatted using APFS, a file system that Windows cannot read. If you want a drive to be compatible with both Windows and Mac, I suggest you format it as ExFAT. See the following link for some background info: https://support.apple.com/guide/dis...Mac supports, that are compatible with Windows.

Ah, got it, makes sense. Will do. And then which USB port on the Extreme is best to plug into? I have the optional USB card for the DAC, so the standard "DAC" output is free. Thanks!

The standard outputs are USB 3.1 Gen1 which should already be many times faster than any spinning HDD, so there is no need to use the DAC port (even though USB 3.1 Gen2 is inherently even faster).

Hi Christiaan.. is there any negative impact to the sound quality by accessing the music files from a networked drive?

While I do not own an Extreme, personal experience with various other servers tells me that there is indeed an impact. Look at it as a form of streaming versus local playback. I know that Emile has implemented various clever mechanisms into the Extreme to counteract or minimize the impact of network data transfer but I suspect that local playback will still sound superior.

In my case the "network drive" I'd want to access to store music on would be the Extreme itself. Does having it permanently mounted on the desktop come with any sonic penalty?

Thanks!

Hey, that is a good question! Well, I would not think so as there is normally no additional network traffic unless the user is actively using it. In any event, I have never noticed this to be the case. Perhaps other WBF users may want to weigh in on this?

Oh, man, Ed. That is a total tease!

Release the beast!!!
