That's a great way to reimburse or fine tune what you think you are hearing. I have often thought how much fun it would be to magically "parachute" into members systems...
That's exactly what I was thinking about, the cover art in Roon. If its loading slow, you can "try" to clear the Cache in Roon. Settings, go to setup and you will see clear Cache. I have done this (I do it occasionally) and it helps cover art load quicker...

The issue isn’t just the cover art. Even just connecting is slow. Plus, if I am 25 feet away it is unusable. However, if Emile feels that this speed/power is the proper compromise for sound quality and usability then I can certainly live with it.
Well here’s what I’ve found after 5 days of router and DCD. I don’t know if its my imagination or bias but to my ears Roon and XDMS are sounding similar and many tracks I played yesterday sounded better with XDMS. I did this yesterday with my wife controlling the iPad and going back and forth from Roon to XDMS Perhaps I’m just anxious to get NSM but yesterday using default Roon and XDMS were pretty close. Tomorrow I switch to alt1
So why would that affect sound quality? In fact, I would think it would negatively affect sound quality since doesn’t it have to pull more cover art now that it isn’t cached?
So here's what I heard today at day 5 using the same 5 tracks for Roon and XDMS
When all was said and done Roon was still my favorite however.....
XDMS did catch up and darn close but not close enough where I couldn't discern a difference but, definitely to my ears, there was 3 dimensionality and it sounded damn good.
The best I do is blind A B A testing where I make the swaps and my wife listens.
She picks what I find to be better every time, but quickly tires of this game!

I didn't realize it could improve on SQ, all though it doesn't surprise me. Kris suggested that. I think it's a accumulated function that by clearing the cache it actually decreases processing? I had a situation a while back where no cover art was loading with Roon and I'm on a GB internet. Talked with Edward, and before he got involved I cleared the cache and the issue was solved. Edward even commented that he learned something by that. Maybe someone who understands "clearing the cache" can explain more in depth...

You can change the wireless mode / transmission power, it does change the sound a bit. I get 15Mbps up/down from it here with the default settings and my Roon remote is fast. You could change the channel, perhaps you have some interference from other Wi-Fi networks. A Wi-Fi analyzer would tell you, usually included with windows. You can login to the router interface and play with the settings yourself:

I hit "add" but that just added a radio OpenWRT. I assume I should delete that?
I think my strategy will be to increase the power and operating mode when I want to copy files to the Extreme and then go back to the default settings for listening. Using "n" and a higher power I am able to achieve 45 mbps which is great to copy files.
A question about burn in. Is there a burn in difference between installing the router/distributor vs. powering the combo separately for a few days, then installing?
