Nice, I’ve been thinking about how to best rip my CDs at a high bitrate…

This ripper upsamples the CD? Why are you saying “at a high bitrate?”

Does it rip SACDs?

I don't believe the Pioneer optical drive fitted within the Edisoncreation casework can read Scarletbook layer(s). The interesting case here would be restoring backup DSD albums stored on BD media. Which is a subject better explored elsewhere since he wasn't raving about how good that solution sounded once it hit his server. :)

Correct me if I'm wrong XDMS will still include PGGB. HQP is another option for getting higher bit-rate from CD rips.

That’s what I thought. I still use my PlayStation 3 to rip SACDs.

Exact Audio Copy on it's highest setting and having it calibrate the CD-Rom station is my goto, though I always wonder if files would sound better when ripped on a system with a proper PSU...anyone who tried that?

Left my system streaming Qobuz through TAS while away the last 6 days.
System still playing upon return. Rock solid. TAS continues to amaze me.

Can't fathom the added SQ benefits from XDMS.

So much to look forward to, hopefully this summer. The whole extreme BPS sounds radical and has me scratching my head about my system's future.

Appears Taiko community expansion showing no signs of letting up! Congrats!

General update:

As most of you are probably are aware of there are global parts (chips) and raw material (aluminium and copper) shortages affecting lead times.

This affects our operations in various ways.

The lead times on new Extreme servers are reasonably under control now, we're managing to keep this at around 8 weeks.

We are redesigning a network card and switch combination as an upgrade to the Extreme, we have secured enough parts for these redesigns to launch in about 6 months. The current designs would only cover a part of our existing customer base with further availability extending all the way to 2023 (!). We are now also working on a router but we have not found enough parts availability to launch that in the same timeframe, it is at least a year out right now unless we find a supply of more readily available parts.

We have been experimenting with achieving performance consistency over a multitude of network setups.

WARNING, the next piece of text is anecdotical only to serve as an example, we do not currently have the manpower to provide support for this type of setup for all of our customers:

A promising setup is centred around a relatively cheap Ubiquiti Amplifi Mesh Router (this router sounds better then frequently used alternatives like Asus, Netgear etc) : https://eu.store.ui.com/collections/amplifi/products/amplifi-mesh-router . The way this works is you connect the "WAN" port (4) in the below attached screenshot to your ISP modem/router, then connect the Extreme to one of the LAN ports (3), and connect your Ipad to the Ubiquiti wireless network. This creates a separate network for your audio devices.

View attachment 84565

This type of setup so far appears to give consistent results across multiple network setups. Interestingly, if you add more devices to this network you will hear it, I can hear an impact from connecting my Iphone to this network in addition to my Ipad for example. This experiment indicates the router having a larger impact then previously suspected and switches being more of a band-aid (adding switches to this setup still alters the sound, but more obviously changes it rather then improving it). Hence our decision to embark on a router design project. The switch we are launching in 6 months has been redesigned with some functionality integrated to account for this, and something unique not currently available, details on that we will not disclose until actual launch, so it should not be obsolete by the time we have this router project finished.
Instead of using the router that comes combined with my Fiber ATT Modem Gateway, I am looking for a Router to use in the interim before the Taiko Router comes around.

Background: I tried to hack around the ATT modem/router to the Edge Router. This turned out to be a spectacular failure. So, I've been advised by a Network specialist to switch to ATT Biz Class and use a Static IP which will allow use of a 3rd party router without having to use "IP Passthrough."

I see Emile's mention of the Ubiquiti Amplifi AFIHD.

Simple question: As it's described as a "WiFi Router", can it also be used with only wired ethernet? I don't use any wifi in my listening space.

And does anyone have any other suggestions for routers well suited to high quality streaming to the Extreme?

Yes, Wil -- you can turn off the WiFi broadcast in the Amplifi AFIHD and use wired ethernet only. However, if you set it up this way on a different subnet as described right below the original post by Emile back in Nov 2021, you will not be able to control the Extreme using Roon or TAS (or to be coming, XDMS) unless you do it from a wired ethernet platform also on the same subnet.

Orbi router with 4 satellites throughout my house and a satellite in my office which has ethernet ports. I run Triode Wire Labs Ethernet from that satellite to. my Extreme.Never onsce a hisccup
Hi Steve, I received my Triode Wire Labs Freedom Ethernet cable, thanks for the recommendation and connected it to my Eero 6E satellite. I’m only interested in noise reduction, since I don’t stream (and don’t plan to). Given that, I read that some here have a high quality network switch between the router and the Extreme, and was wondering if you considered that? Of course, not having to buy another device is great, and we should probably wait for Taiko’s rumoured device anyway…
I’m also looking at changing the switch-mode power supply of the Eero with a linear power supply, and will connect it to a Shunyata AC filter with CCI.

I have posted many times here that I don’t use a switch. Have I considered it….,yes

Emile will be releasing a switch soon with his network card. I plan on using his at that time.

On a topic that has been written about every 100-200 pages on this thread, re: benefits of occasionally restarting the Extreme (and other gear?)....

I had 5 hours of uninterrupted listening time tonight.
I figure I have had my system running constantly for the last ~6 weeks including the aforementioned 6 days straight of streaming.

I listened to the same set of ~10 songs for the first 2 hours tonight (streaming through TAS or off the Extreme directly). Sounded just fine, but felt a bit flat and recessed. Then, I recollected the rec that has been sprinkled throughout on this thread to try restarting the Extreme occasionally (restarting = front button on Extreme or through TAS app; not switch on back of Extreme).

I let 3-4 songs play (as Emile has recommended for the Extreme to resettle), I also switched my dac, pre and amps to standby and back on for kickers.

And, for the final 2 hours I have been immersed and captivated. Dynamics and presence back in my room. I have no clue what is happening (perhaps my cache was too large and impacting performance? no idea). But, I am headed back to listen and re-reconfirm what I am hearing. One caveat, is my power improving over the course of the night?

Seems random, but, at least for TAS and my current system, I might try this every few days, to refresh. Will be curious whether XDMS might behave differently (again, not even knowing whether this is related to the Extreme and/or TAS directly). Thanks for listening to my neurosis.

QUICK UPDATE (24 hours later): Listening at the same time, to the same songs, with the same pint glass that I initially spoke of. I am now glued back in to my seat whereas I was not before the reset last night. Some may question my mental state ;), but will trust my ears and will try this practice once a week to soft restart my Extreme.

Regarding restarting the Extreme: What‘s the proper way to do it? I thought clicking the Front button once served something else? …my way was to just (re-)select the USB driver, which triggers a restart. But probably not the official way to do it, haha…

Hi All,

I wonder if anyone experiences a Roon search problem. My Roon server is SGM EVO. Roon version is 1.8 Build 952.

Roon search ceased to work in any of my devices. The search icon keeps blinking saying Searching for " xxx " E.g. xxx = take my breath away; xxx = Pulp". But no result returned after a long time (over 1min+) . And no timeout, it seems.

Yes. I restarted Asus router, switch and Windows PC server with Roon server. Roon client is also restarted on Windows 10 desktop. The Search problem remains. Searching for “xxx” forever (seems no timeout).

I uninstalled Roon server and remove the data (TWICE). Even after reinstallation of a fresh Roon server, the search problem still persists.

I also tried to unplug from network switch and plug directly to router. Still cannot search.

Finally I installed the same version of Roon server on another PC to troubleshoot. Using the same Roon client (on phone, tablet), the Roon search function works.

I wonder if there is any Windows OS setting on EVO causing this problem ? However, Roon server already turned off Winidows update.

Hi Rocco,
this is currently a general Roon problem, not related to Taiko / SGM.
Roon on my Extreme is working just fine, while Roon on a friend's Non-Taiko Server is exhibiting the same problem you are describing.

There is a thread on the roon forum called "search in roon stopped working", you might want to check progress there.

Interesting!
So my Roon issue that requires a restart every ~2 days could be a benefit after all! (So far it persists, despite keeping the DAC power supply on 24-7, switching routers, and switching USB and Ethernet cords; but I switched to the Triode Ethernet now, so let’s see…). It didn't make sense that it's a USB or ethernet issue, and since I ruled-out the router/data connection, a Roon re-install is the next step. After that, I'm out of options. Perhaps Roon needs to see the DAC being on 24-7 as well?

I restart the Extreme from VNC, ie, the Windows desktop (right click on the bottom left toolbar icon, select power icon, then restart.

Not sure what the restart does to the power supply: if the capacitors discharge then how long does it take for them to recharge and settle? Is that the approximate length of a few songs?

Click the front button twice. 1 click just turns off the video (I think).

Or, you can restart from the app.
