The magic of stereo

You should be very careful with the prices at eBay - some people are asking for a fortune just to impress newcomers and try to rise prices.

A better indicator is looking on the completed items and choose only those who are shown in green (sold item) - they reflect much better current quotations.

Recently the CD gold version sold sealed for usd 158 and used for usd98.00

The mint LPs sold at usd 189.

Steve, I know you are not going to sell your copy, so you are not angry with me ...

Thanks, microstrip. I buy a lot of LPs off eBay, and sell some too. Most of the time, it's willing buyer/willing seller. If they list it for too high, no one's going to buy it, but you can always PM the seller and offer a price that you are willing to pay.

Mark, pray tell, what exactly does todays SOTA or "better" solid state pre-amp or solid state amp actually do to better bring about this illusion, what new or interesting thing does it do that the solid state hafler can not do...what new circuit was invented that is now in all these expensive solid state amps these days...

Tomelex

Tom-First of all, I called the ST-70 a cousin of the DH-220 because they are in the family of products that came from David Hafler over the years. I would be willing to bet you $1.00 that more ST-70s were sold than DH-220s so that doesn’t explain why people are willing to pay over double for an ST-70 versus a DH-220.

Now for your last question: Do you seriously think that expensive preamps for the most part weren’t built to higher standards and with better parts than cheap preamps made at the same time? And do you not think that passive parts have improved over time since the DH-110 hit the street? Capacitors and resistors have certainly improved over the last twenty-thirty years and so have diodes. So even if you want to argue that the circuit used for the DH-110 still represents a SOTA circuit, it certainly wasn’t built with the highest grade passive parts available even then and certainly not now. Seriously Tom, what did the DH-110 sell for new as either a kit or completely assembled? Aren’t we talking about a $200-$300 preamp? Have you ever compared any upscale preamps in your system to the Hafler? Tom, the good thing is that you still enjoy it and you are happy with it. Ditto for your DH-220 and your Yamaha table. That’s all that matters.

DSOTM on CD - I think that the best is the Toshiba "Black Triangle" - this was made at the same time that the EMI Pro LP was made, and came from the same master tape.

It's a pity that the DVD-A isn't stereo (it's 4.1) and I can't rip the SACD.

For me, the ultimate "magic" on CD is the Q-sound Roger Waters Amused to Death. The best CD of this is the "long box" MasterSound.

Thanks a lot Gary, this is fantastic! :)

And what is your take between the Toshiba "Black Triangle" CD version and the SACD?

* As for the CD of Roger Waters "Amused to Death"; I agree, it is quite a "Magic Stereo" CD with the best Q-Sound encoding. It is truly enrapturing!
But Gary, what is the "long box" MasterSound version? Any picture or link?
{I only have the original CD version.}

Thanks!

Wow

I have the Gold Version that I bought new for $18.99

I'll buy it from you Steve for double what you pay! :)

* Sorry, I should have multiquoted this post with my above one. I'll try it next time;
I was just emotionally happy from Gary's response.

For the best in Q-sound, I'd still have to say Madonna's "Immaculate Collection" on first run vinyl has them all beat. You get pinpoint imaging behind you.

I still prefer Roger Waters, and I listen to all my Q-Sound CDs very attentively before.
I am talking about the Madonna CD version though, which is quite remarkable in its effects on the sides and behind you, but her music doesn't flow as freely and pleasantly overall; so that might be a big factor here.
Still, the effects are quite powerful in Q-Sound. That'll be the #2 choice for me,
even better than Sting "The Soul Cages" CD, and Rick Wright * "Broken China" one.

I think the effect of Q-sound is much more prominant on vinyl than digital.

Bruce, you got me! I simply don't have that specific Madonna album on LP.
But on CD, it is indeed very prominent from my perspective, "The Immaculate Collection".

Do you have those CD versions Bruce?

Bruce

I absolutely agree. I was going to mention it as well. For a time I was collecting albums recorded with Q-Sound and have many of them. Those two however are without a doubt the best and wow, I have the Gold Edition

Isao Tomita's Greatest Hits on LP produced an amazing effect with the Carver. You could turn your head and literally "see" images directly to your side. Absolutely believable. Too bad it messed up the tonal qualities of the music at that early juncture......

On vinyl? :)

Sure do. I've tried to get every Q-sound LP/CD that I can. I like that gimicky stuff.

Me too! :)

Turns out that there are 2 Audio CD Gold Amused to Death

The Collector's Edition from 1995

http://www.amazon.com/Amused-Death-...2A73/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1297821133&sr=1-2

The Limited Edition from 1993 which is the one I have

http://www.amazon.com/Amused-Death-...DSI0/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1297821133&sr=1-3

Yep! you have the legendary "long box" :)

It's like the difference between Winston's UDC and UDM. The UDM will just be that little immeasurable bit better than the UDC, but that little immeasurable bit better is what we are willing to pay for.

Yeah, me too!

Not as good as Amused to Death, but I also like the other Roger Waters LP - The Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking.
