All of the beaches here in Minneapolis (City of Lakes) will be closed this summer. Luckily, we can still sail our boat.

btw, just noticed that Amazon Prime raised prices on non-essential products. It's not all items, but I see that $5 can of spray paint I had bought now costs $15 shipped. That $3.17 tube of glue now costs $11.00...

:mad: They damn well better spend some of that on employees who are demanding basic sanitation.

That depends on the type of goods that are made. Our biotech company makes products for research. Making these specialist products all in the US makes the most sense, even though we export them all over the world. Also, even though China is a major market for us, it would actually be dangerous to shift some production there, because of intellectual property theft.

Sure, these are not "consumer goods", so the rules are not the same.
Are we that paranoid about China? I would hope any treatment cure or vaccine would be "open sourced." Anything else would immoral.

As I stated, we are making products for research, not vaccines. I agree cures or vaccines for the virus should be open sourced. I am certain they will be.

What seems to get lost in many discussions on "opening the economy" is that you can't force people into economic transactions. You can't force them to go the movies or to restaurants or demand they enter into contracts for major purchases. You can hang out a big "Open for Business" sign, that doesn't mean you are going to attract customers willing to spend the cash they have on hand or to incur debt to obtain a non-essential good or service.

In addition, the governors are the ones who ordered the shut downs and they are the ones who ultimately have the power to remove those orders. This has been a state-by-state approach for the most part other than for things like international travel.

SorryAIM. I think i misunderstood.

Happy easter to all !

Why crazy, as long as the right of people to shoot each other is observed, it is all fine. . . .

This disgusting and facetious post grotesquely misstates state laws governing the use of lethal force in the United States.

amazing what is being contemplated to bring vaccine date forward - they could end up with a lot of chemicals in a warehouse !

I know from a friend in the research industry that one of the 3 labs in my town that are working on the virus has 12 clinical trials lined up to test treatment candidates and if you have a smart idea you have to wait 2 months
The effort going into this around the world must be mind boggling in scale.
It would be surprising if there are not some breakthroughs in treatment soonish - then you think about the demand for the product ! - hopefully all open source as you say

Obviously things need to be produced on a large scale, but I have read of at least one company that promised to do it on a non-profit basis if they succeed. The details of course would have to be ironed out, for example what not for profit really means financially, and if they should get government help for mass production. On the other hand, there are intangibles like the immense spike in reputation if you have the first vaccine on a large scale to literally save the world and its economies. Those could provide indirect financial benefit that could be taken into account.

Regardless, I am certain there will be such immense public pressure, even on the international level, to have it open source that the first company to bring a vaccine to market will have no choice but to relent. If they are smart about it they will not even wait out the inevitable.

In the phillipines they get shot if they dont quarantine .
In china the door gets welded shut .
Docters got threatened if they spoke openly
Thank god its not my country :)
Nothing social about it imo , just a police state getting out of control

Where the hell did you read that?

Economic systems are an artificial construct. They are constantly adjusted to meet conditions.
They will be ok.

OMG No! The context is missing! There was an incident in one of the major cities where an anarchist group staged a riot during relief operations. They are affiliated with the Communist Party of the Phiilippines and their armed wing. The typical off the cuff statement was directed against the insurgents. There is no order to shoot anybody wandering in the streets. What we have here is social distancing. We are allowed to go out for a log list of essential reasons. Hanging out not included.
