This Corona Virus Mania is Just Too Much, We All Need to Chill!

The US is well known for welcoming different cultures and for celebrating diversity. As a result it seems to me that our culture is less cohesive than most others and lately it is increasingly divided. Politics is only one measure but we should not discuss that here.

The result of this cultural diversity is a lack of homogeneity which benefits smaller and less diverse cultures when they are trying to deal with such a crisis, in my opinion.

The USA welcomes diversity only after said diversity has been throughly assimilated.

There is a rich tradition in the USA of the last group that mass migrated to absolutely despise the current group that is immigrating. If the German and Irish Americans were successful in building a wall to keep my people out (Italians), you would not have Italian restaurants or the tradition of organized crime we brought.

Xenophobia is as American as apple pie, it’s just gift wrapped in different ways depending on what group you are afraid will take your job.

Jeff,
Xenophobia is not exclusively American. Even though Italians, like you demonstrated, where at the receiving end of such prejudice, they are also well known to have manifested such prejudices against others, when they come to Italy.
I just read the other day that produce is expected to rot in the italian fields, as most of the "guest workers" from Eastern Europe, in Italy, returned to their countries on the outset of the Corona pandemic. And of course, not enough italians won't/can't do their job.

Dear Peter,

To fight the virus more successfully you need unity. See if there is any unity in this forum in how to tackle the crisis. Do you realize that countries that are more in control of the situation have their people mostly go in one direction and comply with their government's measures to control the virus. They make it national agenda pulling everyone together like cheering for their country in olympic. Virus controlling strategies come from doctors and the country commander in chief whip the ministers to execute them accordingly. Doctors become superhero because they do things without politic and make sacrifice saving lives. Doctors only ask in return for us to please stay home enjoy Netflix listening to stereo drinking wine while they are risking their lives treating patients. Nationalism is raised so people feel they want to contribute and make sacrifice for the country like doctors to win this virus war. I dont hear much sacrifice in this forum. Most people seem to want to exercise their freedom and let someone take care of the problem. People ask and want so much from the country but when they are asked to make the tiniest sacrifice sitting their asses at home for just one month it becomes the unbearable thing to do. Is this cultural or something else Peter?

Kind regards,
Tang

Hello Tang. I completely agree with this. I am just sharing my observation that it is perhaps a bit more difficult to do that here, a country that is now based on the welcoming of foreigners from other countries and cultures. It was not founded on this principle, but as things changed, it has adopted this. Many if not most consider the resulting diversity to be our countries biggest strength.

I think there should be some unity and cohesion when called for and where appropriate. We see this in NYC now, and increasingly in other states as well. But it is not easy. Sacrifice is often necessary in such times, and I applaud those who make the efforts than seem successful in slowing this down. We are totally on the same page with this.

All I am saying is that it is one thing to get a county of one race and small population with the same cultural identity to behave in a way to achieve a common goal, it is another challenge all together to get a very large country, in both population and geography, with very different regions and cultural traditions to act as one whole and toward a common goal. And this country was founded on the principle of independent, self governing states, not unlike the EU.

People are demanding that the US act as one entity together, and yet, look at the way the different countries in the EU are acting. They remind me more of the individual states in the US, each responding slightly differently based on what their country leaders and people think is appropriate, rather than one cohesive European Union. This is the difference I am trying, inelegantly, to describe. I don't see the calls for Brussels to impose a universal set of rules for the entire EU the way that many are demanding from the POTUS and federal government. If this is what our critics think should happen here, why not there?

We have trouble agreeing on anything over here. Just look at the ridiculous bathroom issue for instance. I can go into one one day, and the other the next day. What woman and their daughters think be damned. No, the US is a culturally diverse country with many competing ideologies.

Tang, this is what I mean by culture. I am happily complying with my state's stay at home order, and have made many tiny sacrifices for myself and family, and for my tenants. We are in this together. I'm just saying that some places are having an easier time coping with this challenge than are other places. Some of the reasons are structural. I would like to think we are doing the best we can.

Agreed.

People call America a “melting pot.” I believe that America is a salad bowl, all parts are quite separate until they get old, soggy and fall to the bottom.

LOL. Seriously, we could do much better if that were not the case. Too bad that many people view life as a zero sum game, instead of rooting for everyone to be lifted up, which can be the case with some good will.

Japan wants to bring back all of their manufacturing back to Japan . Japanese government is now offering funds of 2 Billion to bring companies that have relocated to China to move back. This means no dependence on China for their goods. Won't be long before other countries do the same. After the N95 mask issue.

Hope this is over with soon and we can start getting used to our new normal, mask, physical distancing etc

I think this will be one of the ways things change as a result of this pandemic. Leaders will rethink the notion of "globalism". More self reliance and independence may follow. There will be a response and things will be different going forward.

Perhaps Apple could "repurpose" casinos to make iPhones and HDTV's? ;)

Tang, this is the truest thing you've ever written. I'll freely admit, I absolutely rebelled against the idea of shutting the UK down. But I dutifully did what Boris asked of me, cancelled my remaining patients, lost £1-2k fees, and went to zero income overnt, likely now for at least 3 months if not longer. I don't know how many others are at zero but it is a scary freaky concept. And of course the longer lockdown continues, the longer I have to find £00s/wk to exist.
However I've come around to the existential challenge this thing represents, and am doing my bit. And am determined to rebuild my clinics, community and nation. From now on, all I believe in is my fellow man, certainly we have to get something out of this. Tang, I'm 200% w you.

Jeff, And yet we are told that those coming now, mostly across the southern border, are doing the jobs that nobody wants, as expressed in Alex's post. So, if you believe that, no jobs are being taken. On the other hand, I speak to laborers who complain that their jobs are being taken by lower wage immigrants and nobody seems to care.

I do not think it is as simple as is usually portrayed. There is some truth to both sides. There is a long and complicated history to this. I apologize for having introduced the diversity issue, as it probably falls under the topics forbidden by he TOS agreement.

Jeff, this reminds me of a story that is in the spirit of chilling as expressed in the OP:

Q: What is the difference between knowledge and wisdom?

A: Knowledge is being aware that a tomato is a fruit and not a vegetable. Wisdom is knowing that one should not include a tomato in fruit salad.

. . .

Tinka, a Dutch citizen who grew up traveling across the EU, and who now lives in America having visited numerous states in the USA, would agree with this states of the USA and EU countries analogy.

I've heard it's an issue here in CO for sure, both local trailheads on the front range and mountain towns are being crowded by folks looking to get out. Cars parked illegally, locals getting upset, etc. Destinations like Moab and some CO towns are now "locals only".

My wife and I would be in Moab today, glamping @ the “UnderCanvas” location for a week and riding bikes all over, but that was closed down early by Utah gov’ner. Glamping tents about 50 yards apart so distancing is natural, but the locals were afraid the tourists would bring the Wuhan.
