Why is Lorde royal on this thread?

And why are there balloons?

Which Lorde "Royals" video recording do you prefer the sound of, Tim?

You usually encourage threads to stay on track. This is/was a good one -- let's stay with power music and not turn this into vinyl vs digital vs Stenho happy pony tunes.

I’m unfamiliar with this “happy pony tunes” terminology? Is it a personal compliment? Groves was no help whatsoever. Google gave me this:IMG_0322.jpeg

And you? I have to say that Stenho's, despite sounding more hollow than the base recording, is clearly closer to the recording as heard through headphones than Peter's recording. In room who knows because I am pretty sure Stenho uses an aftermarket microphone and Peter is just using his phone and I think it is pretty clear from looking into these things that phone microphones over represent the effect of the room on the recording due to their omni-directional pattern. A directional mic works much better in most cases.

Shostakovich 8th Symphony -- Third Movement

edit: Go to youtube to play this video.

Below is the same recording and same system recorded with a Shure MV88 microphone into my Samsung S21 Ultra phone. This sounds closer to the in-room experience than phone mic, above. Pardon the canted video. Not suited to phone or laptop playback.

Although the MV88 is more full range, I prefer the on board mic as it is less harsh and allows me to enjoy the whole track without fatigue.

USB seems to kill music.

Okay, thanks for that. I'm told the MV88 microphone takes more of the room out than the phone's microphone.
That is an issue I have with it.

I’ve done video comparisons with the MV 88 and straight phone mic. They certainly sound different, same recording, same room, same system same everything except for the microphone. At this point, I don’t have a clear preference. I suppose it depends on what you’re trying to learn from the video.

I would love to hear zerostargeneral’s fabulous recent piano video with a phone mic.

You are either a audio dealership or you live in a castle... lol
You have quite a bit of hifi gear in your home.
Great vids by the way! :)

None of this gear is mine. The videos are taken on visits if from my channel.

Scenario #1: Tam o' Shanter vs. Tam o' Shanter on same analog frontend

Below is are a set of videos made a few weeks ago of Malcom Arnold's Tam o' Shanter Overture from two different performances.

- The first performance (Version 1 of 2) is from the Reference Recording 45 RPM album titled Mephisto & Co. [RM-2510]

- The second performance (Version 2 of 2) if from the Analogue Productions 33.3 RPM reissue album titled Witches' Brew [LSC-2225]

These videos were originally made in 2021 to see how well the video capturing via. a cellphone could distinguish differences between the performances at a reasonable level when all of the analog frontend parameters were the same (users can/should adjust volume to taste for each video).

From initial listening, many of the differences seemed to come through even though we should all know the sound is still significantly better listening in room real-time.

Note1: If one doesn't like video recordings of this type or enjoy largescale orchestra, you can pass on watching. This happened to be the music I was listening to when I decided to make these recordings.

Note2: I will follow up this post with scenario #2 in the future with a new post thread playing the same album on three different analog frontends so the opposite effect can be observed.

Without much more to say, the video links are listed below for what small amount of curiosity and enjoyment it may provide.

Scenario #2: Same Album on three different analog frontends (Tam o' Shanter Overture, Malcom Arnold)

In Scenario #1, I recorded two different albums of the same performance by different orchestras on the same analog frontend.

In this scenario #2, I recorded the same album (Tam o' Shanter Overture, Malcom Arnold, Reference Recording 45 RPM album titled Mephisto & Co. [RM-2510])

Mahler 1 3rd Mvmnt (partial)
Karel Ančerl with the Česká Filharmonie on the Czechoslovakian Supraphon label, Ctalog Nbr. 50675 made in 1966

This is from a early part of the Third Movement after the second(?) Frère Jacques / Bruder Martin theme. Mahler has an amazing talent for going from the sublime and beautiful to roaring crescendos and back.

I found this to be a top-notch recording. It is clear and open with all sections and instruments accessible. The backing rhythm section of lower bass strings, timpani, trombones, horns can be heard and followed while they ride beneath the featured woodwinds and strings. The famous oboe 'cuckoo' has a different interesting tone. It's a treat. I found it on Discogs.

This sounds excellent to me. Does any modern speaker/amp combination sound like this?

What do you find so special about the sound, Peter?
