Thanks, Bachtoven...will check it out. I like Pletnev's Piano works of Tchaikovsky. Have you heard/compared? Most curious to know from our resident Encyclopedia!

I don't have that CD, but I can assure you that Kholodenko is every bit Pletnev's equal and then some! He has jaw-dropping technique, a huge Russain/Ukrainian sound, but also a wonderful lyrical sense. They don't hand the Van Cliburn Gold Medal to just anyone! ;)

Celibidache, Bruckner #9, Live, Munich Symphony Orchestra, original EMI

Beautifully performed, conducted and well recorded, an amazing performance!

Isaac Stern playing Stravinsky's Violin Concerto conducted by the composer and recorded in 1961. Fantastic playing all-round and you can't beat the composer conducting for "authenticity". This is a relatively recent Speakers Corner LP release. I have attached a short mp3 excerpt I made from my copy of it today.

Thanks for the sample, Jonathan!

An erotic, frothy romp through...wait--wrong forum. Richter playing Scriabin, Myaskovsky, and Prokofiev. No one looks to live 1950s Soviet audio for demo material, but the playing in incandescent.

I like his music very much. While obviously contemporary, he doesn't completely eschew melodies, and his music is often quite gripping and dramatic. The Capucon brothers play the daylights out of the double concerto. Very well recorded, too.

Quite a fine achievement for a 20 year old's first attempt at a symphony. Fans of Bruckner and Wagner should enjoy it. Very good playing and sound.

This is my piano teacher's father. He's quite a fine player, only hampered by a less than world class instrument and a very close/dry recording perspective. He plays the Bach-Busoni Chaconne, 3 Etudes by Scriabin, and 6 Preludes by Debussy.

It may not be as sublime as his more mature symphonies, but hey, it's still Bruckner! Needless to say, it's played to the hilt, and the sound is good if lacking some depth.

I just noticed that Southwest German Radio have gotten into the vinyl business. Absolutely no mention whatsoever of that on their website except that three Johanna Martzy recordings are slated for vinyl release very soon. I am guessing (could be wrong) that these may be remastered from the original recordings that were used for broadcast purposes. I would be surprised if any of these were from the EMI archives, most of which have been released by Coup D'Archet:

For those who have not heard of Johanna Martzy she was an excellent violin player and she used a very rare Carlo Bergonzi instrument - you do not find many of those (Stern owned one as well).

Sadly I do not think her recording career was helped when she declined Walter Legge's amorous advances.

Here is a superb performance of DeFalla's Danza Espanola:

Jonathan, are you going to take a chance on any of these?

I'm not sure no editing was such a good idea, as she hits quite a few wrong notes, especially in the Spanish Rhapsody. Very good sound.
