Can't stay away from Tchaikovsky for too long. A violin concert by David Oistrakh. Kondraschin conducting USSR Symphony Orchestra. Superb performance. This is a great sounding record from Telefunken. A stereo but the way it sounds is quite typical of Russian old recording. It sounds like a mono single microphone with less resolution of the the orchestra in the back. You get an excellent vintage black and white sense of recording hall. Narrow but with good depth. That is how I would describe it. This record has no warmth but no cold also. It sounds really straight forward just like the Telefunken 12AX7 if you have experience on them. My type of sound and tone. It bought this one quite cheap.
Nice post Tang. Russians are giants in the classical world. Tchaikovsky, Shostakovich, Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, Stravinsky, Rimsky-Korsakov, Bordin, Mussorgsky, Scriabin, et al.
Oistrakh, Richter, Kogan, Rostropovich, Rubenstein, Spivakov, Gilels, Kissin, so many.
And of course Vladimir Lamm.
That must not be a black & gold telefunken, if you see the LP, which are Telefunken better ones, this will be black or green & silver/white

It was just a redundant use of words. I should have deleted the word mono and left just single microphone. Anyhow this record does sound narrow. The scale does not go pass my left and right speakers. Maybe my system does not like this record...allergic to this record maybe
.I don't find it unusual to hear remastered mono or stereo Russian records to sound narrow. All your mono records sound expansive? Mine varied.

For Tchaikovsky violin concerto the reference Kogan is over 5k GBP, it's Electric recording reissue is now selling over 1k (I own this one ). The Henryk Szeryng at 150ish on RCA is a good original (I own that too). The Campoli Decca reissue on Analogphonic (which Tang already owns) at 100 USD or slightly less while not as good as original is decent quality and a great performance.
Tang I got a copy of this... yes it is mono. But it is really good, has dynamics.
Even the quiet parts have nice readable depth. Very nice find, how did you discover this one?
I think I bought it from Ebay. I didn't know it is a mono. Will try it with my Vdh Mono Replay to see how different. Glad you like the record. The recording sounds simple less sonic sophistication of today's tech. But give a good musical journey to a great performance of the past.

I don't remember if I have posted this album before. This is a country folk. Yes, I do listen to country music too. I find it is very pleasurable playing this album while working. It is very chilled. The recording is great...seems very believable. For some reason I think of MikeL's system when listening to this album. Mike. I think this album will sound great in your room. Dont know if you like folk songs or not. The label is Gearbox Records.
I was looking for different performances of Schubert Arpeggione cello sonata through Youtube. I think I must have listened more than 50 cellists played this sonata. The cellists who strike my ears with this piece most are Rostropovich and Daniel Shafran. I have a really good pressing of Rostropovich given from ZerostarGeneral. I searched for original pressing Shafran but back then could not find. Recently I found this Analog Production reissued of Shafran playing Schubert and Shostakovich. It is a very good sounding record that I would recommend. I could only imagine the original be even better with no eq alteration. ( I just found on discog selling at $700. ) I listen mostly Schubert on the second side. The first side is Shostakovich whose music is too artistic beyond my understanding. All classical lovers should have this record.

i'm just seeing this now, and listened.....i do like it and bought the Lp.
and thank you for thinking of me, and certainly i love folk 'mountain' music. it's typically very honestly recorded. i especially like that almost always it's recorded live, and never "assembled". so it hit's hard and true. like golden age jazz it reflects real life.
a few favorites of this music are of course, The Weavers, Reunion at Carnegie Hall, and i love Doc Watson "Third Generation Blues'. get that one, even on CD, and listen to 'St James Infirmary".
American 'roots' music is almost always compelling and well performed, the recording quality is variable. but there are many fine ones.

I thought the record would sound so very in-studio at your place. The music is entertaining. The way they recorded has its own charm...exactly as you said no assembled, hard and true. Sounds straight forward like Telefunken. Beauty is in the music.

I have a different reissue that I really like of this. I have never understood why people criticized him for his cello. I believe he with his Amati sounds just beautiful and certainly powerful enough. It should be extraordinary to play the same instrument from being just 14 years old to his death.
About the eq of the older pressings, it can be the opposite. There is more eq in older pressings; under 50hz is generally cut, over 10khz is filtered and even some have dynamic compression. This is just for better and easier handling for older widely used turntables and cartridges of the time. We are lucky if there is access to original master tapes and they are handled and reissued properly. They may be sounding closer to master tape than the reissues, certainly true for some like blue note jazz reissues...
