Hi Marty,

Whilst we aren’t aligned on Heifetz, we are truly aligned on Rabin. What a tragic loss of an outstanding violinist. I love his Bruch Scottish Fantasy and Paganini Caprices among others.
Thanks for the discussion yesterday especially for the heads up on Michael Rabin... he was not on my radar at all so I listened to him for some hours yesterday... fantastic, especially the Scottish Fantasy. Much appreciated. Loving the discovery that music based discussions can create.
Thank you.

Now thanks General, off to find out about Vasa Prihoda. Sometimes I’m like a dog with a stick... happiest in the chase.

Though better a dog with a stick than going bear back PS assuming that ofcourse is a man with a bear on his back.

That Prihoda Chaconne and Tchaikovsky are so unique, G. Thanks for an introduction to him. This guy is like Dean Martin playing violin. What a character! I am glad I could watch and listen him play on youtube.

Kindest regards,
Tang

Dear Tang,

Your curve steepens once again;Prihoda,Taschner and Rabin were musicians with virtuosity. The timing of their careers was such that the elitists shunned their skills in favour of more modest exponents of the bow.Contemporary reviews alluded to disdain as opposed to the majesty they should have been bestowed with.

Kindest regards,G.

Perhaps this has been covered previously, but I'd love to know what some of you (General, Tao, Tang, Ked, Bill, others?) would recommend as the finest performances of these great violin works. Recording quality is SECONDARY. Musical performance is PRIMARY.

Which performances of these, format irrelevant, would you take to a desert island?

Bach - Partita No. 2, Chaconne in D minor

Beethoven Violin Concerto, Op. 61

Brahms Violin Concerto, Op. 77

Bruch Violin Concerto No. 1, Op. 26

Dvorak - Violin Concerto in A Minor, Op.53

Mendelssohn Violin Concerto, Op. 64

Mozart Violin Concerto No. 3, K. 216

Paganini - Violin Concerto No. 1 In D Major, Op. 6

Prokofiev Violin Concerto No. 1 in D

Sibelius Violin Concerto, Op. 47

Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto, Op. 35

( I know I've left off some greats such as Bartok, Berg, Shostakovich, Saint Saëns and many others but I'm mainly interested in the above pieces so please just respond to this list).
Marty

There are some on the list that I am not interested. My favorites are.

Bach Chaconne/ Kogan and (just last night heard) Prihoda
Brahms/ Kogan
Mendelssohn/ Campoli
Tchaikovsky/ Kogan
Paganini/ Rabin

And would like to add Lalo to the list. Oistrakh Lalo.

Btw: I put on Akiko vid just because she's got great neck. ;)

This is based on YouTube?

You should get an audio system and some LPs to verify

Your head is into too much vinyl comparison these days. Marty was asking about performance not sq. You dont need high end to get a sense ofperformance. And I do have these on vinyls. I just dont tell you all the things I buy. :)

Tang, don't you like Sibelius Violin Concerto. It seems it may fit your taste.

Fresh change from discussing 15k cartridge vs new model of 15k cartridge.

Tang, what's the formula for performances. Do you keep the same label and performer throughout like your tonearm and phono, or do you vary it like your turntables and carts?

Try Horowitz - he's never mistake free or flawless, but he may move you to tears.

Well, of course. Horowitz was a singular entity whose musical DNA was wired differently than anyone else. But let's not corrupt the thread more than it has already been corrupted by discussing pianists!

Tao, you're welcome. That's one of the best features of this forum- learning what others think (music and gear)! For example, I never heard of Prihoda until yesterday thanks to the General. I shall be exploring that find. Regarding Rabin, he was certainly better known but since he died in 1972 at age 35, he has been easily forgotten. How good was he? When he first heard him in the 50's, the famed conductor George Szell declared Rabin the greatest violin talent that had come to his attention in the previous 30 years. Perhaps even more impressive, Ivan Galamian, his teacher at Julliard, said he was the most talented student he ever taught and that he had "no weaknesses, never". Galamian's other students were Itzhak Perlman and Pinchas Zukerman!

The Szell recordings I heard at the general's, Beethoven 3rd and 5th, were brilliant. The test press of the 5th made the first edition sound like a compressed mp3.

Dear Tang ,

After having watched and listened to this performance I immediately purchased a vinyl from Melodia, USSR, from 81 with Prihoda for very cheap price.
The western recordings were quoted on Discogs from 650 to over 1000 euro.
Not for me.
The seller from Latvia will ship it to me within a few days, I hope.
Thank you and General for introducing this outstanding violinist to the forum.
M

PS There are also several albums at Qobuz available.
