Is there a particular Roon build that people think sounds the best? I still have

Follow up. Sound is coming from TAS again, but not from the 2 albums I was having the issue with. They were playing on Roon however.... Very strange as both are Qobuz.
I can't speak to a Roon best-build, unfortunately. I am on build 988 but I almost exclusively use TAS.

Two albums not playing -- a problem with the Qobuz API or something else at the TAS/Oobuz interface? Just guessing and I have no special insight into the Qobuz API nor how TAS handles calls to Qobuz for content. Heck, I just learned how to spell API last week!

Regarding XDMS, it would be great if it had "versions" like Roon, to look for the diverse versions and audio quality options for a certain album/track. Better yet if by default it first showed the highest quality version.

then throw in the whole “dude, that function you coded, compiled, and checked into last nights build -- I hate to break it to you but it sounds like crap.”
Not a lot of developers have ever had to deal with the last part.
Like next to none!

Emile says they have a design philosophy and I hope (trust) that it gives coders direction which, if they follow assiduosly, results in good sound.
If they (we) are lucky, the reason the code trashed SQ is understood and can be designed/coded to eliminate the gremlins. I've always told my teams that we learn the most from what fails, if we are listening.

The way files are fed to Roon, can be different from the way files are fed to TAS/LMS

XDMS uses a Streaming aggregator who is fast at resolving any connection issues

As XDMS evolves, I am very sure that we will never release a version which on a "normal" system sounds inferior to the previous version.

We don't have our heads stuck in a cloud so that we cant see if we are shooting ourselves in the foot.

New TAS issue. I have a good collection of tricks in my tool-bag I use to get TAS back up when it goes out, but none are working for this one.

This time it shows the track playing, but with no sound. In the past this would indicate the DAC needs to restart, or pull usb cable out/in, however that's not working this time.

Roon is working.

Any ideas?

Hi Wil

i have had this problem many times and only in TAS. when I look I see the advancing blue line but no sound. I’m not sure if it is genre specific but I doubt it. Perhaps when switching from PCM to DSD. Having said that here is what I find works for me. Push the stop button and then push the rewind button until previous song comes up. Push the stop button and then the forward button to replay the song. I always get sound by sound this. Maybe a player bug. I’ve had the issue several time over the past few months.

I guess I was not clear. I am not talking about versions of XDMS. I am talking about versions of an album

When you select an album in Roon, it appears “Tracks credits Versions” Then you click “versions” This is the feature I am talking about.

when you search for an album at Roon, it will show the different versions of that album, available ripped, or in Qobuz or Tidal, showing the same album in cd qualiry, 96/24bit, 192k, dsd, etc whatever is available for thar album, so one can select which version to listen to. I think it would great to have this feature in xdms.

I think what the original poster was asking for was the Roon feature that provides a tab that shows a bunch of different versions of the same album or track. Not asking for multiple versions of XDMS.

And I should have read the whole thread to the end before replying. @VPN explained him/herself very well.

I will now go back to the rock I was napping under.

Japanese, korean and chinese is what I listen a lot to.

I can see the titles in TAS, I just can’t play the songs.
Hmmm I can do both—see albums and songs and play them.

Apologies

This is what happens at 1 am in the morning coming back from a neighborhood / village party after hours of XDMS testing earlier in the day

That’s good confirmation! I’ll try TAS again. I have no issues with English- just the ones which have chinese / japanese / Korean characters in the file name.

What format/bit depth/sample rate are the two albums that do not play? Are they the same as the album preceding them?

For release, and with respect to local libraries, XDMS will have Directory Tree Walking which means that all the versions that you have of an album should be lined up, enabling you to pick the one you like.

For Streaming Services, and a later release, XDMS will simply show all the matches to a particular album search and you can select the version that you want. We are considering (for a later build) giving precedence to the highest resolution but tied to a user setting that defines the highest rates that the DAC in question can handle. ATM, this is a bit premature, still.

We have indeed identified the root cause for the drop in SQ and know how to fix it:). Emile is quite sure that the proposed solution will fix this, but even so, we will still be confirming the sound quality in practice.

Could someone post the instructions of how to select usb profiles in Roon? I had a link for this but it has gone defunct. Thanks!

The short version from the Taiko document available from their website is:

Guide to selecting USB Profiles on the SGM Extreme Music Server
There are 5 steps in this process:
1. Look up your DAC in the DAC list to find the ideal USB profile.
2. Make a VNC remote desktop connection to your Music Server.
3. Execute the selected profile by right-clicking it and selecting "Run with Powershell".
4. Select the appropriate output bit rate in Roon.
5. Setting TAS Buffers (only required when you have TAS installed)

The parent document with detailed instructions how to do each step is located here:

Have fun.
