Todd's AG Trio G3 System -- it's about time

I just looked up the specs on the devor 16. 5’x5’ and 441 lbs. that would take some effort.
unless you want Woodstock levels they´re far too much
2x23 will keep you busy however big volume you need to fill
and with finesse and speed
 
the exciting about the Devors is their radiation pattern
they don´t excite room nodes as normal subs
in fact I stood behind the Devor 16 playing pretty load in Rainbow studio in Oslo and there was almost quiet behind it
so more of a direct sound that "hit"you
Its a cardioid sub this made + 15db at the front more then the back, geithain speaker made this principe over 30 years.Pointsource-Cardioid.png

how deep it goes is also a matter of eq and that it has capacity enough to eq properly
but I doubt someone would want very much deeper than 15-20Hz in a home environment

Its not about how loud. For me it is how deep it goes.
One spec usually not shown for HiFi subs is spl capacity, and if that capacity is available at the lower threshold... As Leif said this is useful not just to play loud but to allow one to dsp to the desired response and still have a huge amount of headroom.

Word on the street is that Jacob Heilbrunn dumped his wilson wamms for the Avantgarde Trio G3s.

Can anyone confirm that?

Wow! Good to know...and unlike the WAMMs, I have heard the new AG Trios with dual bass horns. I wonder if he went iTron as well which means no Dartzeel 468s either...an entirely new system.
 
To summarize: How to get flat bass to 20Hz from Spacehorns

1. Stick them in the front corners and use the room modes to support the bass. Use positioning and DSP to flatten out the frequency response.
2. If you have the iTron you can turn the gain of the amp down to allow more headroom in the spacehorn. Then use the DSP to extend the bass output as above. (Shelf filter etc.)
3. If you are using an amplifier other than iTron then purchase multiple spacehorns to give sufficient headroom to flatten the bass to 20Hz
4. Purchase a very high quality 3rd party subwoofer to cover the range from 35Hz down to below 20Hz and integrate this.

Thanks again for this incredible thread. I remember you mentioning a while back that the 3rd set of specehorns did not make things better when you were auditioning the speakers. Just to clarify, are you still aligned with that statement when used with Itrons but not when using 3rd party amps? can you please elaborate in non-technical language? many thanks!
 
It's in Jacob's bio on Michael Fremer's Tracking Angle, so the information is secret no longer. I can confirm that Jacob switched from the Wilson WAMMs to the Trio G3s.

Jacob started with his darTZeel 468s. He is not using iTron. (I am not sure if this means he has the iTron enabled model and is simply choosing not to use it, or if he did not get iTron with his G3s.)

Through intermediaries I tried to suggest SET, such as Viva Aurora, Lamm ML3.

Now that you have your Trios G3 dialed in, can you post some videos showcasing the sound of your system. I have recently completed fine tuning my new Ultimate Reference Horn system and the system sounds phenomenal, even through YouTube videos. Would love to hear a glimpse of how great your system sounds after all the meticulous setup and Sterling Trayle’s setup specialist’s service. Would love to hear the end result that has been achieved.

Good to know and will be interesting how the 468s 475 watts power works with such high sensitivity (109db) speakers. They could easily work beautifully given the caliber of both. Just will be interesting if he chooses to rework the amplification over time given his extreme flexibility now.

I tried to suggest through intermediaries that that likely would be a sonically unsatisfactory way to go. I believe AG needs very pure amplification -- not a lot, but very pure.

Interesting on how the Dartzeels compare to the itrons.

Also, interesting that he is using the dcs Apex instead of Wadax, just like the Avantgarde systems presented by the North American distributor (she has both dacs)

Not quite the first collation of components that one would consider as being particularly harmonious , the words etched somewhat springs to mind … Still one never knows etc .

Its not , Its just an opinion that you and Ked and others propagate.

I think J heilbrunn should first try I tron as thats how they were designed by the manufacturer .
Then his darts and other solidstate , lastly he should opt for " SET coloration "

Yes; that adjective as applied to amplifiers is a characterization, an opinion.

I generally agree with how Kedar thinks about the simplicity or complexity of amplifiers.

I think it is not a frivolous view to consider an amplifier with a single output device as more "pure" than an amplifier with many output devices. Do you really want to argue that a Thomas Mayer SET amplifier is not a simpler or a more pure circuit design than a CH?

This is one reason I would like to try an SET myself.
 
Wow just woke up reading that microstrip’s favorite reviewer moved from Wilson WAMM to horns.

looks like JH is moving off the NLF curve
