How do you make a true comparo w/o a shoot out on the same system ?
Is this a pop quiz?
To be at its best each speaker would perform optimally with different associated equipment, room, music and not to mention different listeners. 1:1:1:1 comparisons are rare, time consuming and difficult.. In theory we try to control variables. In practice it;s very difficult. Reviewers make valid comparisons all the time without having the components in house.

Gregad , Shoot out Shoot out ???youre talking preferences with such systems, al designed by very capable and expirienced people , there is no bad ,there is no the best either in my opinion

I did not say shoot out. I said comparison. They may evaluate the speakers by any criteria hey desire. They need only state what it is.

everyone thanks for the comments. last night my body was hurting (a very good hurt i might add), took a couple of Advil and had a great listening session trying to stay awake. slept like a baby. this morning had business meetings for the last 4 hours....will respond later when i get a chance.

trying to think of a way to describe the performance without sounding crazed.:D

i considered being politically correct and not allow myself to get too over the top after one night. but that would simply be blowing smoke.

i've heard a number of state of the art speakers in my time.....and quite esoteric systems. i've been to my share of shows and high end stores. i've never heard anything like this before. and as good as the main towers were, you cannot even compare the main towers to the full 2 tower system. it's a whole different paradigm.

and this is with simply sitting the main towers in place, putting the tweeters at full, setting the bass towers in place and setting all the adjustments to flat and the crossover at 40hz. so far thru yesterday afternoon, the main towers have 230 hours of breakin, the bass towers started playing at 7:00pm last night. so one would think that with careful set up by the speaker designer, and hundreds more hours, and maybe even better amplification it should get better.

adding the bass towers yields dividends thru the whole frequency range, fleshing things out and adding 'ease', nuance, and tonal complexity. and think about how linear the bass is; 4 15" powered subs per channel, each in their own 150 pound sealed box, needing only the slightest excursion even at very low frequecies. and perfectly blended into the -4- 11" woofers. the complete sense of effortlessness and seamlessness is off-putting when listening to any familiar music. really breathtaking and laugh inducing. you gotta be kidding!!!

the room and speakers seem to be perfectly matched, and speak with one voice. all the work i've put into the system seems to have come together.

the music is so much less hifi, less reproduced, less processed, and more immediate, more real, more not constrained by technical limitations. the music has such a higher emotional content; not by any tonal warmth or artifact; but by simply allowing the signal to be fully rendered.

expectation bias? honeymoon syndrome? placebo effect? nope.

i guess i've left myself little room for future rationalizations. not that i think i will need it.

i think a few fully sane local friends will likely visit in the next few days/weeks....maybe they can add their more objective perspectives.

Gee Greg, lighten up ;)
All I'm saying is... if I were to drop 200K on a speaker system, wouldn't it be nice if the 3-5 top end statement products were there so you could hear each with the same electronics and room. It would make deciding which one, easier given similar price points. There needs to be an Uber dealer to pull this off and Manufacturer's who are not afraid to market their competing brands with the same dealer. We can only dream.

I'm working on it.

My point is that substitution of one component into a similar system is a good idea most of the time. At this level everything counts. Substituting these four different speakers in the same system and room may not put them on the same footing.

Mike,

Please use all the superlatives that you will need - we want to hear from you, not from a political correct committee. And if possible illustrate them referring explicitly to the titles of the recordings you are using - we will enjoy and also learn.

Mike I remember the good old days when a true sub was 20-30hz.

---- Awesome Mike, very well said! ...And the proof is in the listenin'.

Like that will ever happen unfortunately...seems to me, one has to make their choice based on faith, experience of others and what speakers you have heard that are most likely in systems that are different from yours. Not easy in terms of decision making.

I know who the winner would be and i haven't heard it yet .......:)

Relax , he's getting the additional subs next week ......................:)
:b
I thought there were two JL Gothams free with purchase.

Mike - Congrats - this is sensational news. Really happy to read! You've been in a relentless pursuit for the last several, and i have enjoyed watching the evolution of your system. I smiled when you spoke of what has happened in the system...and how you just laugh in the room. I get that. Nice one.

Micro,

when i get home tonight i will try to relate specific recordings to specific impressions. right now i will say that last night any recording with a piano, cello, violin, or vocal blew my mind. i have a Hungarotone Cello-Double bass recording i love that i've played hundreds of times. i thought i'd heard it. not even close. the interplay between the 2 instruments, the fingering, the woody projection and character of the cello was on a whole new level. i did not think about speakers, it was an event. i felt lucky to have heard such playing. then i realized i could listen 10 more times if i like.

a Beethoven Late String Quartet with the Quartetto Italiano is another very familiar recording i thought i knew. again, not close. it simply took flight and soared. i don't have the words to adaquately describe what i heard. but again, the nuance and lack of restriction of the speaker at all frequecies allowed the interplay and flow of the music to transend hifi and reproduced music to some thing more. all that detail and linearity was in service to the music.

Just wait til the 458 monos arrive...talk about lack of restriction...;)

Can't speak to the issue of personal mental health, but I will report for duty at Mike's this weekend...for the purely altruistic purpose of informing the WBF community!! ;)
