Modern speakers vs Vintage speakers

After reading the above article, I had decided to go for active bi amplification without using internal network.

I use Lyngdorf 2170 which has speaker output, analog output and digital output with highpass or lowpass options.

I set the highpass at 500hz on digital output and going through my dac and integrated amp to drive treble horn.

Initially, I had tried to use speaker output of Lyngdorf 2170 with lowpass at 500hz to drive bass unit of Altec A7.

But bass sound is lagging behind the sound from treble horn.

Thus I had used analog output with lowpass at 500hz to Crown XLS 2502 which drive
bass unit of Altec A7.

But bass sound is still lagging behind the sound from treble horn.

Then I had used analog output with lowpass at 500hz to Rogue Cronus Magnum II which drive
bass unit of Altec A7.

Now it is working fine with treble horn.

Many people may think that SS amp sounds faster than tube amp but it is on the contrary.

I had used Telefuken ECC 83 and Amperex ECC 82 in Rogue, but after replacing Amperex with GE 12bh7a tubes, Rogue sound more robust on bass.

After getting rid of internal network, Altec A7 sounds more transparent with clean details.

Since I am happy with sound out of Altec A7 after active bi amping, I retired Lansche 4.1 to attic on the third floor.

Please note that I had been using Lansche 4.1 since 2006 after buying it new at 50k$.

P. S. ticking noise is from my chair while I reord the music sitting in the sofa.
If you want to get serious about active and don’t care about analog then get a mini dsp nano digi, two DACs and two stereo amps or four monos. The nano digi is only digital in and digital out, thereby not tying you to inbuilt DACs or amps of substandard quality.

Oh, and put a good reclocker in front of it.

Unless the price is very good and you have a use for the drivers why would you want these speakers? DIY isn’t the same as vintage speakers built by known companies there are few hits but mostly misses in DIY!

2220 are also for front hornloading.....

I put Denafris Gaia DDC between Lyngdorf 2170 and Dac(EmmLab Dac 2, Chord Dave and Mscaler) for digital signal of 500hz and up.

Line Magnetic 508 seems to work better with Emmlab Dac 2 while Cayin 300b pp works well with Dave.

I will also put Cayin 3oob pp back into rack after further organization.

The bass amplifier(Rogue Cronus Magnum II) is driven by Lyngdorf 2170 analog output which is pretty good for 500 hz and down.

The only advantage of a digital xover is that you can change the frequency response without changing the phase. in all other matters it is worse. You have to work with at least 24 bit so that you have at least 16 bit resolution at low volume.
a common problem with digital xover and digital volume control i'm not a fan of it

Lyngdorf 2170 appears to work at 24 bit resolution.

It is much better quality than Mini DSP.

So far it seems to work well judging from the actual sound. ;)

Here's the Tchaikovsky 3rd movement with David Oistrakh and Kondrashin

And this Heifetz interpretation is recorded from a Lenco and Shure, straight from the phono into a Tascam

Errrrr … thats not exactly coming across well at all , whether the original media recording or the recording of the recording on that particular system I’m unsure tho I suspect the latter.

I think the match between the Lyngdorf amp and a tube amp for the horn will cause integration issues...I have found the amps either need to be identical or of the same type (SET, triode PP etc.) for all drivers. That is why I recommended something digital that allows yOu to do that without it’s own analog electronics... Another one that does it is a DBX but one of the upper models...the basic driverack is only analog out. The Accuphase F25 is good if you can find one for an analog xover. Accuphase has nice digital xovers as well...there the quality of the analog output is not much in question.

The system recording is poor...exactly the kind of argument a solidstate with Magico guy would make for what is wrong with tubes, analog and horns. Very colored and overall low resolution.

The recording direct to TASCAM is quite good and shows you don't need a super high end analog rig to get a great sound from vinyl.
