Sublime Sound

I think my system will be the only one from the Boston Group heard and seen on videos. The others seem adamantly opposed. Madfloyd enjoys the videos for what they are.

One takes a big risk posting a video of his system. I sent mine around in private initially. I thank Kedar and Tang for their efforts.
Not sure why you think yours will be the only one. I’ve done them in the past and will most likely make more.

That would be great Ian. Can you point to some links of previous videos you made of your system?
And do you think that Tasos and Al will actually make videos of their systems and post them publicly?

I would guess there would be no chance of Al and little for Tasos.
I think I have mostly sent around private videos (including to you), it’s been a while. I think I had a public one that goes back to my Doshi/Wilson dats on another forum.

Here is a video I made a while ago trying to capture timpani and orchestral scale from my small room and small speakers. I made this right after I started using my Ching Cheng power cords on my amps and replaced the IEC connector on the JPS Labs cable with Hubbell industrial outlets. In room, the sound really improved. The video does not quite capture it, but one does get a hint of the impact from the drums and overall dynamics.

I have also happily discovered that my twenty year old headphone amp, a HeadRoom, can be hooked up to my iMac and used with my Sennheiser HD580 headphones. The combination actually improves the sound of these videos a fair amount, especially in the bass. The amp also allows me to lower the output from the computer and increase the volume from the amp for a cleaner sound.

The video may be restricted in some locations due to copy writed material. Holst Planets, Uranus, Zubin Mehta, Decca:

It sounds great, Peter! You are doing more than anyone else to suggest, if not to prove, the efficacy of Magico speakers + Pass Labs amplification.

Thank you Ron. I appreciate that. There are plenty of Pass/Magico combinations out there. I just may be a more vocal owner than most here on WBF. Some people are just not convinced by the combination or they have heard examples with less than optimal set up. I am beginning to suspect it is more of the latter, but I don't really know.

DDK has convinced me over our discussions that good sound Has a lot to do with managing the energy in the room. My room was way over damped before and lacked life.

I distinctly remember listening to my system with Tasos and one of his reference recordings. We focused on dynamics and timbre of timpani. They were muted and lacked any sense of impact and weight. That was over a year ago before I made all the changes to my system set up.

It is an ongoing effort, but I am starting to make some progress and hear the potential of my system. I'm happy some of that comes across on the video.

Yes, this one sound very well voiced on the vid (again Sony MDR Z7 phones with tubed amp).

My fave Planets remains the Bernard Hermann Phase 4 recording. I don't know why, it fills me with intense feelings of nostalgia. I doubt though that it would be anybody else's fave.

Sounds good, Peter. Glad it wasn't Saturn... :)

Thanks Peter, is this GC or the MSS. Separately I was blind tested on a video between the two carts and chose GC for better nuance though only one record tested, with cello and piano. It will be interesting to see if you blind test us if it holds true in your system too

Hi Peter,
Tone is pretty natural through the slower/less busy parts and tympani's sound very good but the overall presentation is somewhat lightweight and gets a bit congested through the full bore parts. This could of course be the recording as there is certainly compression on the recording to some degree as well as the medium (I find big classical works better with digital somehow...with the exception of Die Walkurie on Decca from 1965 conducted by Solti). At least from this recording it seems that middle dynamics are good and instrument tones seem pretty natural. To tell if the dynamics are really scaling as they should would require to hear this recording on another system, possibly with horns, to see if you are getting everything out of it or not. Have you ever heard this piece live to get a conception of how much impact could be missing?

Out of curiosity, what's your preferred digital version of this?

Digital version of what?
Holst Planets. You heard compression (probably both on the recording and the medium) and said that you found classical works better with digital. I realize that was a general statement but wondered if, when it came to this work, you knew of a digital version that you found to be superior in terms of less compression in the actual recording.

For this composition, no as I don't listen to it often. As you noted, it was more of a general observation I have made over the years as I have several hundred orchestral scaled recordings on vinyl. I find small scale classical to sound wonderful on vinyl...

Understood, thank you.

Hi MadFloyd,
HDTT DSD256 version is worth a try and available in two halves.

I have that. I was not impressed at all. Have you heard it?
Yes, but not for some time. I tend to play my XRCD2 rip. There is also a Reference recordings hi-Res version on Qobuz but haven’t got around to playing that and the Previn version on XRCD from HiQ records I also have ripped. One day I’ll get to do a compare.
