Taiko Audio SGM Extreme : the Crème de la Crème

Thank you for responding - so rather than there having been a change in design philosophy, it is more correct to say that the approaches taken for the two devices are simply different. Are you able to explain why the bit-perfect approach is favoured for the Extreme? Is it reasonable to surmise that developments in DAC designs over the last five years or so mean that offloading the upsampling (from those DACs which do it) to the server is not necessary for optimal sound quality (with the types of high-end DACs typically partnered with the Extreme), and that other aspects of the whole digital reply chain (as addressed by the Extreme) have a greater influence on the final sound quality?

So you think it is an Horizon issue, not TAS? I was wondering about that too. I we should have a forum for Extreme/Horizon owners!

I get the pop even when there isn't a format switch but it seems only with DSD.
It is related to the external clocks used in the horizon is my bet. I implemented external clocks for my pacific on the JLsounds board as a prelude to the Horizon implementation and have been struggling with this for a long time now. What’s more, it seems like TAS will transiently switch into PCM between DSD tracks. The pop will be less conspicuous if you play a 44.1 kHz family PCM track before your DSD album, compared to if you play a 48 kHz pcm track as TAS seems to switch back into whichever PCM format was played before the DSD.

Obviously if you had a 44.1 kHz PCM track before the DSD it will not need to switch clocks.

let me know if you guys replicate this.
With Roon the player stays in DSD mode the whole time between DSD tracks.

PS in my situation the pops only occur transitioning from DSD back to PCM and not from PCM to DSD. but this is much more noticeable with TAS since it is dipping back into PCM silence between EVERY DSD track.

That is exactly what my reply would be :)

What would the experts here recommend for an Ethernet to WiFi adapter for the Extreme? I’m using one now and it works, but I gather it may be impacting the sound quality?
Note that I do not stream, and do not plan to. All files are stored on the Extreme. I therefore only use WiFi to control playback. (I don’t have any Ethernet drops nearby).
Thanks

Has anyone tried the Audioquest High Current Dragon, Firebird, or Hurricane with the Extreme? Which did you prefer and why? Thanks!

Wow... My Extreme with TAS is heavenly... not sure if I am ready to deal with XDMS sound quality ... Thank you Taiko team!
The SQ uplift Milestones coming along the Taiko Extrme are
- Network Card and Switch
- XDMS
- A pipe line that streches way into the months and years

I had the chance to review the engineering of the card and switch last week.

It's Emile's relentless approach, out of the box thinking, state of the art componets, defense electonics quality of implementation and testing, testing, testing

It's a sure fire formula for lifting SQ out of a sinking noise floor

I know you are also testing, testing, and testing about Extreme softwares.

I believe Emile and you always do the best for Extreme users.

I don't like the Dragon at all, the Firebird I could live with if I had to, the Hurricane sounds great here.

I was just going to reply in regards to Dragon HC, and I saw Emile chime in. I played with a pair of these Dragon HC, albeit not with Taiko, its on order. I used them with Mephisto. I know entirely different application. With the Mephisto the presentation was very unnatural. My plan is to use Furutech 55N, with all NFC Rhodium connectors with Taiko, with Rhodium NFC Dedicated outlet. I made a DPS-4.1 Alpha with all NFC Rhodium Connectors for my DAC, love this cable (only 12 hours on it) may try it on the Taiko, but I think 55N is the right direction...

Curious what others have noticed? I have been using TAS for the last few months , last night I switched over to Roon and it was a big improvement. I know everyone is different just curious what others have noticed

Another happy Hurricane HC user here.

I did not compare to the other Audioquest model you mention, though.

I compared the Hurricane HC to the Hurricane Source, to a Shunyata Alpha HC and to Lavricables Grand 30, and the HC was the overall best in terms ot tonal density, weight, authoritativeness. Not the fastest / most detailed of the bunch, though.

Do you mean Roon improved with respect to what it was a few months ago, or Roon now sounds better than TAS?

On my system I like Roon better at this time

Simorag, May I ask what receptacle are you using with the Hurricane HC? John
