Taiko Audio SGM Extreme : the Crème de la Crème

I check in here occasionally to see what’s going on and have found the last few pages very intriguing. There is so much happening and a lot to look forward to. The switch/router look great, especially the silver with black top.

I am assuming that the ‘switch’ will be simply an Ethernet in/out box that feeds the Extreme alone? If so, will it be possible to use the Router as a conventional switch - I assume that is what the ports are for? I have 4 units in my rack that take an Ethernet feed and therefore require a switch and I’m hoping that the router will fulfil this function enabling me to remove the switch that I am currently using and use it elsewhere.

Long time lurker here. I own a K50, I understand that your Target consumers for the router and switch will be extreme users , will you at some point in future maybe selling these for non extreme users ? will the router or switch make the most difference for a non extreme user ?

The surface finish is actually stronger then anodised aluminium but being glossy a scratch shows better. Btw we are open to non glossy / polished surface treatments, I’m just showing what we have ready right now.
Hi Emile and thanks for posting these gorgeous photos which most definitely whet the audio appetite! As stunning as the polished finish looks I sometimes favor a rough hewn, industrial look. If any photos come available of such I’d love to see them. Wishing you and all the folks at Taiko a fabulous 2023!

Yes, the switch is 1 in 1 out, optimizing and replacing the direct ethernet interface. The Router has 5 configurable ports, of which one will be the input of course, leaving you with 4 outputs.

I can't really say at this point, have not investigated the impact for other server brands at all.

More finish options to follow! Bead blasting the chrome finish actually already makes it look almost like the Extreme, we just performed a test with that.

Does the copper finish have a different sound character to the chrome one? I’m guessing it does.

Thinking back to my days of owning Astell & Kern players where they offered a full copper chassis and a stainless steel one. One was not better than the other, but they did sound different, with the copper one having a warmer sound than the silver one.

Luckily the sheer mass minimizes the coating influence.

The copper finish is beautiful, though I hope (and expect) some kind of a matte black finish will be offered that matches the black finish of the Extreme. That said, does the sound change if you leave the copper “raw” to age and develop a bit of a patina? ;) Maybe it will sound more “natural” (I feel safe to say, ddk and Peter probably don’t lurk on this thread :p.)

I think if you have black components the copper finish fits in beautifully with black...

another question for Emile. Nothing yetis been said about the new ethernet card. Will that also be available at the same time as the switch. Seems to me that that would be the best case scenario.

in the great scheme of things where Taiko did the following
1. XDMS
2. New USB card
3. Switch
4. Router
5. New Ethernet card

I seem to recall that up to now the biggest impact was the new USB card and recently some of the back end changes made to XDMS however I think I recall Emile saying the switch and ethernet card is the most impactful

@Taiko Audio

can you rank these 5 from biggest impact down for us elves

Really nice work team @Taiko Audio! Especially the chrome like finish looks gorgeous! Will this be the new Taiko "design language" going forward? Meaning, will the new Extreme and BPS 1 and 2 box versions be available in the same design and finishes?
Hi Emile, possibly you missed the question above or maybe the answer can't be given as of now. Would you mind to leave a quick comment?
