What's Spinning Tonight?

Today is Thursday November 28, 2024. Thanksgiving in the US. This recording was found in archives in 2005. It dates to the Friday after Thanksgiving, November 29, 1957. So it will be 67 years old tomorrow.

It’s quite good. Monk is in his usual style, and Coltrane is in his more easily understood earlier style where mere mortals can figure out what he’s thinking during one or two listens.

This morning I’m trying to figure out the sound of my latest purchase - The new David Gilmour album ”Luck And Strange”. I feel it is rather low level recorded, which I think is kind of a ”big miss” in production. However, when you crank it up fairly well it really comes in to bloom.

Also, I’m trying it out through my headphone system (still from vinyl though), which get one even closer into Gilmour’s world. Very intimate , narrow and close. Sounds really really good!

I’m jumping between the Koetsu Blue Lace and the Ortofon MC Diamond trying to figure out what sounds best on this album. Haven’t decided yet. They both have strong AND weak areas on this album… The AirTight Opus-1 is not in for this album just yet… maybe later.

When I’m fully awake I will have a real go on the big system, crank it up to see what’s going on - see if can get this ”live feel” that I’m used to :D ! I still would have preferred the black vinyl issue over this opaque silver vinyl issue.. but it was the last one in the store, and I REALLY wanted it for the weekend. The guy in the store told me this album had sold like butter melts in the sun… I guess I must get the black vinyl issue later on.

David Gilmour’s new album ”Luck And Strange ”

As for now I think I have reviewed this album good enough to see what is working best in my system.

No doubt that the Koetsu Blue Lace is by far the best cartridge to play back this album.

As I have been jumping between the Blue Lace, and the Ortofon MC Diamond, I have found that the MC D gets too bright in the mids and upper end when you raise the volume to proper listening level. Also it becomes clear that it lacks the low frequency energy compared to the Blue Lace.

Having played the album back and forth numerous times I felt it was time to give the Airtight Opus-1 a go, as it is a very special cartridge. In my opinion it doesn’t work on this album, as it gets very fatigue in the mids rather quickly, and it gets way too bright in the upper frequencies at higher levels.

As this is a progressive rock’n’roll album it really needs that extra push in volume to fully sing and come into full bloom. Surprisingly it it worked very well on the Technics SL-1200G with the Nagaoka MP-300 moving iron cartridge. However, if played at higher levels, I could feel it was not able to hold things together as good as the more sophisticated cartridges on the Ascona Neo deck…. but clearly good enough to let it run on normal listening levels all day long if needed.

The Koetsu Blue Lace cartridge really shines on this album, as it is so powerful, and really gives me a full bottom foundation and thight punch in the bass. At high volume it holds the midrange in place, and it never gets too bright and sharp in the treble. As known to many, the Koetsu’s are crazy good when it comes to female voices, which is true when Romany Gilmour sings the song ”Between Two Points”. Her voice sounds very mighty and full, and at the same time, like honey to my ears.

All and all… In my system, the Blue Lace is the winner by far in this call out.
