Modern speakers vs Vintage speakers

They are lively but I still find them pretty shouty overall with the vocals.

Strings are quite sharp as well. i was just at an Opera last night in Zurich Opernhaus (Donnizetti's Anna Boleyn...3 1/2 hours!) and strings sound nothing like this live...even sitting pretty close. Don't want to dampen your enthusiasm but have to call it like I hear it. What kind of phone are you recording with? Can you get a high quality video recorder and try it out? I have found that there are settings on the Iphone that can improve the sound of the recordings (I use HD-60 mode on my old Iphone 7).

It also sounds like the room you are in is very live...is that a correct assessment?

The system recording is poor...exactly the kind of argument a solidstate with Magico guy would make for what is wrong with tubes, analog and horns. Very colored and overall low resolution.

The recording direct to TASCAM is quite good and shows you don't need a super high end analog rig to get a great sound from vinyl.

Recording direct to Tascam always sounds great, you are bypassing the speakers and room and mobile phone. It is not realistic representation of in room sound though

Yes, I know...done many that way myself but it shows you how good the source/material are...they degradation that comes after has nothing to do with the source/material at that point.

Amps and Speakers?

I think the match between the Lyngdorf amp and a tube amp for the horn will cause integration issues...I have found the amps either need to be identical or of the same type (SET, triode PP etc.) for all drivers. That is why I recommended something digital that allows yOu to do that without it’s own analog electronics... Another one that does it is a DBX but one of the upper models...the basic driverack is only analog out. The Accuphase F25 is good if you can find one for an analog xover. Accuphase has nice digital xovers as well...there the quality of the analog output is not much in question.
I have two sets of LM 508 but one of them need repair.

I also consider trying analog crossover between Dac and integrate amps.

Let us see what happens.

Bi amping is not easy to take care of everything one by one as trial and error.

Biamping and active crossovers are a lot tougher than they would at first appear. The mismatches with amps is a key consideration IME. Getting drivers to blend properly is a difficult endeavor.

The simple versus complex approach… now there’s a double edged sword just waiting to happen. I’ve fallen more to the as simple as is possible side of that equation but that also reflects a (perhaps over)sensitivity to coherency as an issue/challenge/resource/constraint for this particular seeker. Some can seem less immediately challenged by discontinuities but for me it’s an immediate and complete illusion breaker.

We each bare our own tilts in perception and a range of experiences with horns over the last decade and living with these day to day for the last few years have shaped those needs even further so now also the dreaded flow and immediacy and dynamics are very much a part of my baseline system expectations/addictions.

For me I was never willing to trade the coherence of my big full range electrostats and ribbons for the benefits of horns (indeed I had horns, Klipsch La Scalas, before planars) . I had to find horns out there that could equal planars in that realm and “go beyond “ with the horn virtues as well...coherence and low coloration were the challenges that most horn systems I have heard stumble over.

Now I use Cayin 300b PP for treble horn and Rogue Cronus Magnum II fitted with Telefuken ECC83 and GE 12bh7a for bass driver.

It sounds very musical with nuanced details.

Bi amping is effective in giving clean and transparent sound.

Now I am trying to minimize horn coloration while keeping its unlimited dynamics.

I also ordered PAP analog active crossover which can also be used for Scaena 3.2 that I plan to assemble after optimizing Altec A7.

I had almost done tuning of Altec A7 as I want it.

Not too much horn coloration while keeping unlimited dynamics and nuanced details.

As soon as I get PAP analog active crossover, I will also report my impression of it.

P. S. Ticking noise is from my chair since I record it using my cellphone while sitting in my chair.

What is the crossover now?

Lyngdorf 2170 has high pass and low pass function.

I use analog output with low pass filter and digital filter with high pass.

Analog signal drive Rogue Cronus Magnum ii which drive bass horn.

Digital signal goes to Denafris Gaia DDC and to EmmLab Dac2 which feed Cayin 300b pp amp that drive treble horn.

I had done some reoganization of the components.

Also I replaced Rogue Cronus Magnum II with Crown XLS 2502 as amplifier for bass.

After bi amping bypassing internal network, Altec A7 sound transparent as planar speaker. ;)
