My Io had played nice 2 month, and my repair guy was scheduled to come visit last week to hear the system. 2 days before his arrival the left channel died again, regretfully i had gone to the bathroom right after turning on the power supplies, and the smell of burned electronics was heavy as i returned. Lesson learned, like a small child, you should not leave a Io unattended for to long ! One of the EL 34 tubes was lighting up like a christmas tree and one small transformer was very hot, nothing looked burned or had exploded this time. He came over anyway and we had i nice evening listening to music. He took it with him and saved me 300 km of driving, he is a really nice guy, Io ownership has its plus sides too.:) Reminds me of this !View attachment 140090

Hi Lagonda, that happened even after you lower the power input voltage to 220V or so (from 235V ) ? I have just had a 3KVA isolation transformer custom made to lower the 225V from the wall socket to either 200V or 210V for the Io. I was hoping it could make it “safer” for the Io :(

So did i o_O Maybe it was a fluke, it has been running cooler with lowered voltage. I have changed all tubes except the EL 34, my repair guy told me not to change them, they were inside specks, maybe one went nuclear. I had already bought 4 new ones, they are going in now. No diagnosis yet. I have this whole ritual, i turn on the system and wait 5 minutes, then i cross myself, with fingers crossed 2 times and turn on the first power supply of the Io, wait 2 minutes, cross myself 3 times with fingers crossed and turn on the second power supply. I then wait until both lamps on the front of the power supplies are lit, and then start playing a cartridge with the preamp still muted, hoping he signal helps during warmup. Maybe i did not wait long enough between turning on the first and second power supply. Or maybe i am just superstitious, with a little OCD !

Hi Lagonda - does this mean the Io now works, with the bad tube replaced?

You wrote "like a small child, you should not leave a Io unattended for to long" - very good point.
And turn it OFF when not in use!

No i think something else has blown too, but i hope it started with a bad tube  My repair guy actually has a active life besides repairing the Io, and i suspect his wife is tired of it interfering with their retirement, i have to be patient !

Sorry to hear that. My feelings are with you. Some of my problems have taken a long time to solve too, but afterwards I was glad.

I always turn it off, when not used. I have a whole ritual there too, waiting a few minutes between turning each power supply off, and turning of the step-down transformer half an hour later, if there is bad weather i even disconnect the power plugs.

I just love the sound, it played fantastic before it broke, i am not giving up.:) I an not even mad or disappointed anymore, its just business as usual by now. I was hoping for 6 months before brake down this time, but 2 months was all i got the last time too.

Stop loss!
I built my Thorsten Loesch LCR RIAA with Borderpatrol choke input psu and haven’t looked back in 20 years
I know Leif, but i am not a "solderslinger extra ordinary " like you and i am stubborn bordering stupid !

Must be some part in that psu thats under dimensioned, otherwise it would last
Maybe something intermittent with the transformers, Aesthetix seem to recommend "Upgrading "older models with their own in house made transformers, maybe they go bad in high voltage countries ?

I feel the same and am very apprehensive about turning on 88 tubes. It seems as if I am doing a startup sequence for a NASA space mission. I think this to myself, but the inner me says, be ready just in case.

It is not going to explode

While this ritual may make you feel better. I assure you it has nothing to do with saving you from the unfortunate problems you are having. The Io is totally dual mono it it really doesn't care how long you wait between turning on or off channels of the separate chassis. Just don't snap things on-off-on quickly-- that's bad for other reasons.

I'd be looking at your B+ pass tubes - the el34's and their sockets - if the sockets are worn and you loose bias then you are in for nuclear fireworks down stream. It really doesn't matter that your Io is "newer" Chinese sockets are abysmal and they are prone to failure at any time. The metal quality loses its spring and the 'fun' begins. NOS American sockets practically last a lifetime. Unfortunately, this what the world has come to - The Japanese sockets available now are better.

Are your el34s current production?-- my experience is that current production tubes in this position are very prone to failure- not because of the Io- but because current production power tubes have a host of problems that are not culled out by many vendors today. Pay for screened tubes- even then, current production sucks in this critical position as they are time bomb waiting to go off.

Old stock is best here. While I have original Mullards, my stash is getting low after 20 years and I will have to move to my German RFT ( Siemens) which are the next best thing or Japanese Matsushita here soon. Still not inexpensive, but not Mullard prices and they wont go nuclear like the Russian , Slovakian or god forbid Chinese tubes. Sorry , I don't have any love for new power tubes of almost any type as the consequences of poor production can be catastrophic. I have old production EL34s and 6550s , 6V6s in various vintage amps and those tubes are at least 40 years old -- unthinkable with new production. We have little choice. Small signal tubes I can live with- they sound meh- but they generally won't destroy your equipment.

Also, we have heard that the Aesthetix products in this line up have had new transformers designed for them. We can guess why but we will not know the real answer.

Working with 220/240 should not have any affect on reliability versus 120 v types-- actually they might theoretically be less prone to problems because of less of a differential between primary and secondary. If I had to guess ----and I believe you have transformers that say "Mercury Magnetics". You 'may' have transformers whose insulation has intermittently broken down and point to a problem with the original quality of the specified part from Aesthetix or your el34 tubes or sockets are bad.

A good tech can leakage test the transformers with the right instrument. Ordinarily, this kind of failure is one of the last things you look for as a tech- but in this case we know that the transformers were re-designed and taken in house. So, there is a good reason to speculate here-where we ordinarily wouldn't do so.

FWIW the only real failure I had in my Io in 20+ years of ownership was the transformer and the requisite regulators associated with it- I changed both B+ and filament transformers on both units and upgraded the caps along with the replacement of regulator--- sound familiar?

Lastly I assume all the PS caps have been checked for ESR on the B+ and filaments and all the decoupling caps have been checked in the head unit for leakage. This is a pain in the _ss but it should be a maintenance item at this point- replace them all - they're not expensive but the labour component is gruesome.

My Io ran for 20+ years with Mercury Magnetics transformers before what sounds like a similar failure to yours --- the regulator and transformer for the B+ on that channel failed - what went first will always be a mystery.

Sorry for your experience Milan, I have been really pleased with my Io now Eclipse status with the new transformers- cost per day of ownership has been really low and a 20+ year run for a piece of stereo equipment that is actually supported by the mfr.-- I'm ok with based on its performance.

Good luck with your repair.

Thank you for your comprehensive post, yes it all sounds familiar :( I will pass your post on to my repair guy. I have been using NOS Russian EL34 tubes, but new JJ's are next in line  If the Io is not able to operate on current tubes, it is going to be a hopeless situation, no way i spending more on tubes than this thing is worth. Its the same with the transformer "upgrade ", shipping and transformers is probably more money than the value of the Io, and still no guarantee it will be fixed for good afterwards :(

a couple and I bought a spare one to not be without for months on end
turned out to be same crappy quality
I did have one period of almost a year without break down, right before my warranty ran out ! If i could just get 6 month between breakdowns i would be happy !:)

I wonder if you (and Leif) had bad luck, or used the Io in not-so-good ways (before rituals). Like keeping it on and running hot for longer periods (like I did). I ran Io mk2 for ten years, and upgraded to eclipse, before having a serious problem. But then, it was not easily diagnosed, and I had to ship all three boxes across the atlantic....and wait a long time. Aesthetix told me that the error was hard to identify, and in the end they had to replace both volume controls and some other components (not power supply). Yet they made the repair for a very reasonable price. It has now worked well for six years. So in my case, at least, "crappy quality" is not a fair judgement.

What is more relevant for me, is if Aesthetix will cooperate with a local technician, the next time some problem appears. Like Kcin mentions "a good tech can leakage test the transformers with the right instrument". Its been a long time since I've opened the power supplies, since I have not had problems pointing that way. But I wonder, how can I identify the need for tube change, in the p-s, does the sound get more muffled, or what. The tubes are 'stock' from Aesthetix 2018 I think. I am using NOS in the control unit, esp v1-v2 position, but have not experimented with NOS in the p-s.

My "remedy" - like before - is to use it sparingly, not let it get too hot, and when problems show up, get a replacement, so you can still play your records. This was actually an interesting experience, for me, when the Io was away for major repair for a long time. I first bought a very cheap Chinese Riia, that sounded very bad. Next, a used Graham Slee Fanfare 3 phono stage, for ca 200 usd. Not so bad. And finally, ASR mini basis mk2 (800 usd used) that sounded quite OK, and - interestingly - had some of the same sound philosophy as the Io. So I've kept the ASR, like a plaster on the wound if Io goes to repair. However, I have to mention, I was amazed when the Io came back, after more than a year. It viped the floor, including the ASR. A HUGE difference, in my system. The ASR sounded quite good, it was on the right track, but very anemic, lacking dynamics and muscle, in comparison. This experience made the central importance of the phono stage startlingly clear to me.
