Digital or analog? Breuninger says... and asks what says you?

Same for me John but when some tell me that i'm not an audiophile because i don't have a turntable that's where i think i have the right to defend myself, i have NEVER said that turntables don't sound good what i do say is that MY preference is CDP playback that's it, my ban will be over on november 6th, i will then be using the PRIVATE MESSAGE only.

What , who told you such ... Direct drive owners ...... agreesive as hell ..:):):)

--- Andre, as you well know there are some very strange characters that we met occasionally on the Internet, and power trip egos are part of that picture.

Please, don't feel sad about it, to the contrary, rejoice! :b ...One less problem in your life.

One ain't better than the next; they just have to cooperate mutually in harmony together that's all. If one cannot, that is its own downfall, no more no less. ...Talkin' digital, and analog here.

but when some tell me that i'm not an audiophile because i don't have a turntable

Those are comments directed by "snobs" or those who think they know it all. I have faced it myself because my system isn't up to their standards. Luckily I have NEVER found that to be an issue here at WBF.

I will have to listen to that clip again , i must have missed the music the first time ...... :)

I'm a Steve Roach fan too. I put 'Early Man' on our Atma-Sphere Bass of the Year list (year 2000).

The best digital system I have heard by far is the Stahltek, which retails for $72,000 (for both seperates). It sounds very smooth, detailed, analog attributes, etc., etc. The designer and I were listening together one time; I had the same cut on LP so we played it as a comparison. After 5 seconds he turned to me a said 'Digital has so far to go...'. I think its this honesty on his part that is why his gear sounds so good- he is very aware of what the bar is.

I've always been an analog die-hard, but I also like music and will listen to the CD if that is the only format I can get. The Steve Roach stuff is only one small example. Recently in working with out LP mastering system I have really come to appreciate how amazing LPs really are- the primary limitations exist in playback, not the cutting side. I figure its all entertainment, and in that regard its supposed to be fun- the boom line is music is music and amazing recordings are amazing. I really like it when the two are the same :)

Great stuff!!! Thanks for all your great posts which i have enjoyed reading over the years. In fact, I once emailed you about Stahl-Tek to get your advice, since i read elsewhere you really liked it. It is the only digital i have considered moving to from my Zanden. Any thoughts on this? Feel free to PM if you prefer.

That article says CD sales "last year" were 130 million, yet Nielsen Soundscape reported 149 million sold in just the first 6 months of 2012?

I am agnostic on the issue myself for lack of exposure to good analog, but I thought this was pretty funny (from TAS backpage interview with Manny LaCurrubba, founder sausalito audio, and chief engineer, performance media industries, ltd):

Q: Are you suprised at the survival of analog?
A: I am a bit. Digital is such an obviously technical superior medium and so much more musical. Unless, of course, you have come to associate vinyl's particular distortions with musicallity. I do have thwo theories for the phenomenon of vinyl hanging on so long, however. One is that Michael Fremmer happens to love the format and also happens to be a really entertaining guy and an excellent writer. He has probably single handedly set back the cause of better audio by 10 years. Secondly, I heard it said once that a person will prefer the format that was playing the first time he had sex. So it is just a matter of the older generations dying off.

Edorr-I read that smartass comment in TAS. If this guy really believes in his statements, I wouldn't buy anything he designs and sells because I know his ears are crap.

That's hilarious

Nor me either - I pulled up one of his white papers and read he says he's a loudspeaker designer too. Can't believe he listens, avoid!

Any qualities he may lack in the listening department he more than makes up for with a good sense of humor, which is a quality aften lacking in the audiophile community.

For the record, I have no doubt he actually believes what he writes. What is more disconcerting is he apparently had sex for the first time listening to digital, which given his age of probably around 50 is worrisome. I presume he was busy fiddling with electronics in his late teens / early twenties, when others his age were just trying to get laid (while listening to vinyl).

I was actually listening to an AKAI GX35 reel to reel tape deck at the time, but no nostalgia to return to that format.
