Digital or analog? Breuninger says... and asks what says you?

It's ok with me if you prefer digital. but surface noise can easily be dealt with. Cleaning issues also causes problems for CD. Cd skipping is nasty.
Look at this video

To save time you can view the dirt microscopically @5:42. The clean record is @7:36, Noise free playback is @8:06.

Some surface noise is due to poor setup, not all the fault of the LP ...

Who needs CD's? I have not had a harddrive skip in ages. Meanwhile, cheap 1TB solid state storage is imminent.

Many don't use servers though and are still spinning discs in their transports.

I mean no offence, Dallas, but if this is the attitude you take, it's no wonder they don't want to come over. You've just got to understand that this is an esoteric hobby that deals in, from the civilian's point of view, insignificant improvements at an outrageous cost. Most of your friends probably think a good midfi stereo system is too expensive, and would not recognize the difference (other than volume the probably don't want) between that and $100k worth of high end. They don't get it. They don't care.

You're asking them to come over and look at your personal obsession and you think they're ignorant for not getting excited about it?

Tim
What is my attitude? Offering to let someone come over? I'm not that mean of a person. I have even been known to cook a steak for my friends that do come over. ;)

Again...you're pushing the issue IMO. Like it's the only thing that matters. FYI - I have plenty of LP's that are sans-noise so I don't buy that argument that all. And for what it's worth, most RBCD sounds like crap. Yeah it's noise free, but where is the music? The sound is there in all its crystal-BRIGHT delivery, but the music is nowhere to be found many times.

Sorry John, i'm not pushing anything, all i said was that i prefer cd,s that's MY choice NEVER said that vinyl sounded like crap, i said they where NOISY and they are and not all cdp,s sound good just like not all turntables, but ALL cdp,s are NOISE FREE and some even sound pretty darn good, so please live and let live.

I love the sound of cd,s, not only in the morning, but ANYTIME.:):):)

Servers are the way to go , IMO, Players are practically obsolete, since i still enjoy purchasing and storing something physical, servers wont be a part of my main system for a longtime .

I use them elsewhere ...:)

I agree. Still holding on to my physical media though (in case).

Rip once. Never touch again. Occasionally I will dig up a booklet to flip through on classical material. More likely I will surf to allmusic.com to read up on album/artists on the iPad while listening to the file from harddrive....

Yes a lot of RDCD sounds terrific...I have quite a few actually that I enjoy immensely. And yes, let's live and let live. I'm just glad I'm not without either format.

All of my CD's/Hybrid SACD's are ripped onto my HDD, so I rarely play the physical discs. I'm still hanging on to them though......

Of course. Same here. Only alternative would be to sell them.

Not an option for me...been there and it killed me. Had over 400 CD's and had to sell them...got pennies on the dollar, but I needed to eat.

The u tube music videos skip and repeat also. What's up with that?

On a good turntable that is properly setup, you can not hear surface noise.

That being said, you need to take much greater care of the signal to master for Redbook CD than to a tape or hi-rez file.

-----...And the several rituals and setups and cleanups to play LPs on that expensive turntable, with that expensive tonearm, and expensive cartridge, plus accurate motor, and efficient suspension, are to be taken serioulsy into consideration.
...Surface noise or not. :b

And good quality records aren't cheap either.

-----The needle is stuck in that sticky groove. :D

I will be very careful because i was just BANNED on Canuck for saying that I'M not crazy about subwoofers with FULL RANGE stats.
Wouldn't want the samething happening here because of vinyl.:):):)

I would like to know what causes that.

The founders are digiphiles, so I think you are safe.

Don't clean records very much, don't care about noise that much, enjoy listening to AAC mac mini server with Stax headsets.

To me, the noise reminds me that the beast is alive, breathing and operating. There are tolerable levels of noise I don't mind trading for musical and tonal bliss.

No wonder people accuse audiophiles of not going to live music. There is always wheezing, sneezing, farting, yelling, phone ringing etc.etc. and a constant din from halls, wind, crowds etc. None of that perfect black silence that certain audiophiles seem to think is essential to the listening experience.

Records aren't expensive if you are willing to look for them, unless you want only recent releases.

Vinyl and tape are physical as well as electronic playback mediums and the physicality translates into musicality, IMHO.

-----Andre, methinks that they did you a favor by banning you. :b
It simply wasn't a wise place with wise people that's all.
Be happy, and frequent only smart places with smart people.

* Look; how much do you think it cost all together to have an entire analog rig that equals a digital one in sound quality?

If you give a dollar figure you just missed the question's heart (the true meaning).

Nothing, because they are two very different entities; they'll never sound equal, ever.

It is something that I do not want to debate scientifically - with some vinyl setups the surface noise seems very reduced and most important, subjectively seems to be separated from the music and not interfering with it. It seems to have a different fluency and being disconnected with your listening. As we say, your brain makes less effort to ignore it. Or maybe it is so busy enjoying the music that it has no time to notice the noise!
