Gryphon announcement!

This seems a bit odd to me after the introduction of the Ethos CD player, my vote for the most beautiful CD player ever.
The Ethos looks OK, but not the most beautiful CD player ever. Slapping a triangle on the front of a large rectangle does not quite compared to the cleaner lines of the Ethos. The Apex looks like it is wearing a pair of bikini panties ! ;)

To my tastes, the Ethos design is classic Gryphon/Rasmussen, and the Essence duo is brilliant in its classic simplicity. The Apex not so much. The triangle looks like an afterthought rather than an integral part of the design.

I swapped my Kalliope Dac for an Ethos last Tuesday. My goodness, who knew CDs held such secrets. And the DAC, whoa. It is startling how much improvement is made with this one silly triangle.
I have a Commander and Apex and special stand on order. July they say. And today on Instagram I see they ship those two with their best power cables. Finally, a high end company that doesn't send stock cables you never unwrap. Kuhl.
Vivid Spirits and a full loom of Stealth Audio cables. Grimm MU1 and TechDAS Air Force III are the other sources.

First listen when picking it up at Kyomi Audio. Thanks George!!!
Ethos2.jpg
Stealth Cloude Grande Full Silver power cable with Stealth Sakra V17 LE interconnects.
Seemed like the proper cables to go with it so I grabbed them both.
Stealth Octava-T AES/EBU cable between the Ethos and the Grimm MU1.

All Black version. The round leather thing is where you place the CD Clamp while swapping discs. Included. ;)

Kyomi system pre opening the Ethos.... All MBL Gear + Grimm MU1 + Vivids

Can't wait to hear the new gear.

Congrats! Very exciting news on Commander/Apex! On your observations on their digital, I wonder how much of the Ethos improvement is about it being completely turn-key (ie, including transport, transfer to DAC, conversion to Analog, etc). Have Gryphon shared anything with you on this?

Gryphon just told me to expect a major step up in sound going from the Kalliope to the Ethos. Otherwise I have to rely on what is on their webpage and the various reviews. The Ethos is just brilliant though. Absolutely stunning sound and function. The new remote with the Ethos controls my Pandora as well so I drop one remote from my array or remotes. I believe having the transport and the DAC in the same chassis is a real plus. The sound of Redbook CDs is startling and quite a step up from anything else I have experienced.

What you need is a high eff / high imp speaker design( non horn :) ) then you can have all the gryphon goodies with an essence.
The amp manufacturers cater to speaker design deficiencies afaic.

Of course you need a 600 hp engine to make a 2,500 kg car react fast .
What one could also do is built a 1300 kg car and drive it with a 400 hp engine to get a much more agile / fast combination
Long live Lotus Motorcars and the ethos of Colin Chapman!
You raise a very interesting point that is worthy of further discussion on loudspeaker efficiency.

Congrats on a fantastic system. I am a Kalliope owner too (not many of them around it would seem) so very interested in your experiences in moving to the Ethos. Are you using the Ethos just as a DAC (streaming) or mainly for discs? Did you look at other options? Many thanks for any insights.

I am strongly interested in both functions. I adored my Kalliope and was worried about changing. There was no need as the Ethos is a fine step up from the Kalliope and offers a few functions the Kalliope doesn't. The upsampling to higher bitrate PCM as well as DSD is very useful and I enjoy the results of the processing. There are more filter choices but so far it's been difficult for me to hear differences between them. I can easily hear the overall improvement in the DAC section. It offers a wider soundstage with pinpoint location for the various elements. The speakers get out of the way more than ever. The dynamics are huge and very obvious. I have used the DAC portion both with the transport and hooked to my Grimm MU1 for streaming Qobuz and Tidal and local files. There is never a dull moment with this DAC. But poorly mastered and lesser recordings are a bit more obvious now.

The CD transport function is a big surprise. I had no idea these kinds of improvements were possible with good old Redbook. To me now playing a silver disc is so much closer to playing vinyl now. A very analog sound is the result. I had high hopes and it has exceed them all. I believe the Ethos is a bargain at it's price. I have no reservations about strongly recommending it.

Thanks for the fantastically full and generous response. Much appreciated and congrats again. I think the Kalliope is very underrated but there is always better and I have been thinking about adding CD into my system!!! Enjoy in good health.

Aangen, how do you like the Ethos after one more year? Any new impressions?
Maybe other Ethos owners here? Other comparisons of the Ethos inbuilt DAC to the Kalliope?

It is still one of my all time favorite purchases. The DAC portion is an obvious step up from my much loved Kalliope DAC. And the CD Transport is just simply stunning. No one would believe how much better silver discs sound with the Ethos. On first listen it is immediately obvious. I am very, very pleased to own an Ethos!
