Magico M9

Cannata, I hope you don't consider me a "horn tyrant". I really enjoyed my two Magico speakers: Mini II and Q3. I had them for years and visited the Magico factory, discussed speakers with Alon Wolf at the local dealer, and have heard many different models. I have preferred the top lines with the early wood Mini and M5, then the Q 5/3, the M Pro and the M2/3. Unfortunately, I have not heard the M6. I really like my friend's M Pro.

I do not think the local dealer, Goodwin's High End actually demoed the M Pro and I know they never got the M6 in. They will not get the M9 and certainly not the Ultimate 3. Unfortunately, the larger models can't really be heard at the dealer, at least where I live, and it does not seem they will be at Rhapsody NYC either. These threads are good because they expose us to these large and expensive speakers. The photos in actual listening rooms are always fun to see, and I would love to hear a couple of videos playing a string quartet or larger scale classical.

I now have a completely different system, but I remain very fond of specific Magico models. The company clearly is doing something right and I fully except that the M9 may be an exceptional speaker. In fact, I am eager to hear it. I just don't know if or when I will ever have the opportunity to hear it in order to form an opinion.
If you got the huge Magico Horns then you could be a horn AND Magico tyrant...um I mean lover! :p

Hi Peter,

Where did you hear that the M9 would not be at Rhapsdy in NYC?

I have purchased two pair of M9s, they are already paid for. The first pair will be installed in the Dallas/FW RLR in Q1'22. The second pair will be installed at Rhapsody in Brooklyn soon after the Dallas installation.

My mistake Bob. I remember reading that the pair was going to Dallas and I must have incorrectly assumed that there was not a second pair going to New York. My mistake I apologize. Thank you for the clarification.

Which room is it going in? That sounds very exciting.

Sure. No doubt the M9 production has been delayed. I should have had my M9s installed several months ago. Stuff happens. Very excited now though.

Already have piano movers lined up for the move in. Had structural engineers OK the flooring, no problem, BIG heavy beams under the room where they will sit.

I even have a cardboard template that I play with as to where the M9s will sit.

We are going to show the Dallas M9s with a certain set of Pilium electronics, then the Brooklyn location will show the M9s with another set of Pilium electronics. The set up at the Magico factory is set up with a third Pilium configuration of electronics.

We will show in the three locations that you can install M9s in many sized rooms.

I am currently talking to a few very serious M9 buyers that are waiting for my M9s to be installed as they have similar rooms.

'22 will be a fun year!

Bob I'm impressed that you've stepped up and purchased one of these flagship speakers. I hope to hear it someday when I'm back to traveling.

If you are referring to those massive Western Electrics, they also need SPACE. A 1500sf room for those big Western Electrics in London could cost $5 million alone in a very good but not uber luxury neighbohood. Probably not far off $2M-5M in most other major cities.

So yes, I could totally see that level of commitment at that point because (like David and his Bionors), they can afford all the costs (including huge spaces) to fit them. Yes, there are a few who live with the fridge and the bed behind the speaker, but with those few exceptions aside, those big systems require far more than the money to pay for the equipment and room treatment. Its the real estate which is the biggest financial commitment.

I am not referring to the speaker choice here, but the fact that additionally there is no stromtank and there is a 5 dollar cable.

All of those are interesting choices frankly! Given that Living Voice is adamant about supply massive battery supplies, I could imagine the concept does work depending on the situation of localized power. Never heard Stromtank and only fleetingly considered it but was very happy to go Torus and a UPS, and it has worked well. As for 5 dollar cables, I know DDK has been adamant about that for years. In electronics, parts quality matters, but I feel sure design matters at least as much. Sometimes the simplest solutions are the best...not the most expensive.

I used a $63 Samsung dvd player as a transport for years...and it best all comers up to 1000 for a transport with the Zanden DAC.

A good $1000 wine may be given a score of 97 or 98 by judges. It is easy to get a wine that scores in the mid to high 80s for $10 to $12, and a 95 scoring wine can be had for just over $20. Now how much YOU enjoy each of these wines may be a different matter.

By the way, I never drink $10 or $1000 wine. I do drink $20 wine on a regular basis and $100 wine on special occasions.
Fully agree with you
Excellent posting regarding wine IMHO
btw. your last sentence mirrors exactly my habits

So you normally listen to Bose, but on Special Occasions listen to Wilson. ;)
I actually do have a pair of KEF LS50W in the bookshelf to deliver half-decent casual tunes when we have non audiohpile guests at the dining table ;)

Easy to use for casual background level music entertainment AND saving on precious tube life on the main rigs

It was just a joke - nothing more. I enjoy a $30 bottle of wine most of the time too.

This thread had gotten so tense that I was hoping some laughter would help. It didn't.

That is almost correct except the wording should be that Magico delivered it’s first pair of M9s in Hong Kong..
Corrected.

Dear Bob. I hope you don't mind I post a video of Magico here. It is not the M9 but hopefully it could draw us back to the fairway. I think the Magico in this video plays the track superbly. Youtube is more compressed than video file I have. Lately I have been in group chat with many Magico system's owners. Starting to understand Magico more in a good way. This clip, my friend who is the dealer was fooling around to see if he cound set up a system to sound decent in a few hrs. There will be a Bangkok audio show next month. These speakers are probably borrowed from his customers. :D Good business model..no need to invest. This is his small show room...more like a place to give him excuse to get out from the house and his wife. He will use better electronics at the show. Heisenberg, Stern, Taiko, etc. oh QSub too. People love subs.

There's a new answer to the Question of what is the most critical component in a loudspeaker?
The drivers? Crossovers? Cabinets?
None of the above...it's the casters to move these babies around.

One small question, does Magico offer the service of measuring the loudspeaker on-site at the customer's facility.
after all, one would like to hear the full potential. not everyone has the perfect hearing or measuring equipment.
i think that's the most important point;)

Yes, the M9s are calibrated for each specific room in which they are installed in utilizing a process involving the MXO crossover. The room specific tuning can even be done remotely utilizing team-view, FaceTime etc. This process is accomplished with the on-site installation personnel in unison with the Magico factory personnel, which all depends on where the M9s are being installed.

The M9s can be adjusted with regards to the bass and mid-bass via the very sophisticated, BUT ALL ANALOG MXO crossover that is placed between the system preamplifier and the system amplifiers.
