Sad news. MBL has filed for insolvency.

I disagree with the fundamental notion that what is commonly known among audiophile types as “natural” sound to be exclusively the playground of system owners who use analog, tubes and horns.

Fundamental? The only people who attributed that claim were the ones offended by Peter's thread title 'Natural Sound' as self righteous. Mostly Lavigne and Al M. -- some time back. Amazingly we lived through it. It was faux indignant then and no less so now.

Recently you've been wearing your system on your sleeve.

That is absolutely correct Tim. When I described natural sound, there was no mention of specific typology only qualities of the experience and a set of values. Significantly, I heard the same qualities from the Diatone cone speakers and DDK’s digital player.

Many mid-market manufacturers are providing better sound at lower prices.

I'm using a DAC from Holo Audio called Cyan2 that cost me £1,150 ( $1,300) new. Add to that HQ Player upsampling for $300. I was using a Holo May or a Gryphon DAC, I sort of preferred the Gryphon DAC.

How good can a $1,300 DAC be? Frankly, it's astonishingly good. It replaced the $6,000 product from the same company. It's a pared down version leaving just the essentials. As a result, they can't make them fast enough and there is always a waiting list.

When we move to Central London inside 5 years I will likely get a Grimm LS system, a relatively new brand with true cutting edge technology. Valves and horns? Do me a favour.

The MBL insolvency manager press release is weirdly uninformative.
"Things are great but we can't pay the staff". what am I missing?
I'm relatively new here with a modest, but very good sounding system. I have the Holo Red and Cyan2 and just added HQ Player a few days ago. Great bang for the buck for those of us who don't have deep pockets.
PS I really enjoy this forum

The majority of audiophiles, including me, are addicted to UnNatural Sound (TM). Proudly
We read your constant digital posts, so you don’t have to state this

Hi, most owners here have very good sounding systems, modesty varies

sbo6, is it possible for an audio system to be both rolled off and ear-piercing? Can you give a few examples of such systems?
Sure, many horn - based systems. I've heard many DIY with Altec horns, I heard JBL Everest at RMAF some years back, horrible, lifeless, Aries Cerat soft highs with no bass <40Hz, Avante Garde at LSAF sounded like way too big speakers in a small room with poor high end (squeaky yet slightly rolled off), I can keep going.

I agree that there are many bad sounding systems in general and some bad horn speakers. I think of ear piercing systems as being bright with distorted highs played way too loud, but not also dull and rolled off at the same time. You describe a unique combination that I have never heard from the same system.

What you don’t realise is that many horn lovers might 100 percent agree with the systems you have heard. 95% horn systems sound bad. Hence post videos to see if people agree or don’t.

Can you give us a list of horn lovers who agree with you that 95% of "horn systems sound bad"?

Why would I give you? You can check with David, Bill, General, if you want. Do some research as you have very low exposure to the category.

I knew you couldn't substantiate your claim.
I have zero interest in educating someone who has no willingness to learn. These are available comments on the forum, if they escaped you that is because of retention bias.

The majority of audiophiles, including me, are addicted to UnNatural Sound (TM). Proudly so in my case, I must say!
Yes the horn/ tube fellows are just very loud in this forum, in real life they are a tiny minority. They are as persistent as born again religious zealots, the true chosen people of audio. It does get a little tiresome in the long run. o_O I wish they were not so busy trying to convert us none believers.

Thankfully not all horn/SET lovers are like that. But yes, it does get tiresome.

Milan, It seems to me that the mainstream dealer/unnatural (TM)/anti video fellows are just as loud and tiresome in their zeal trying to not lose the rest. And they are not the tiny minority. There are different approaches to the hobby and audiophiles are passionate people.
