Taiko Audio SGM Extreme : the Crème de la Crème

hi, you better clean all that dust !
This is piece of Taiko ART called extreme.
Mine is super clean after 3,5 years but I heve no carpets in my house.
Yes, planning to clean it which is why the top is still off :)

Thanks- would it be fair to say that in order of best performance, from router to switch, the diagram should read:
1) DAC
2) RJ45
3) Fiber ?

Asking cos I'm wondering whether to sell all my RJ45's :)

We're still testing the firmware and software and at this point, we do not yet have a definitive answer as to the preferred order of the connection methods from router to switch.

I don't mean to beat a dead horse, however this is where a video will be very helpful. I do understand the effort it took and is taking to get everything out the door. In the long run you will save time with a video...
Yes, for sure, and well noted. As mentioned, a video cannot currently be made but I will see if I can make a video if and when (TBC) I receive the combo. :)

I have been thinking along these lines myself. If XDMS is as good in my system as folk are saying, then there could be merit in my obtaining a small Roon server and tucking it away somewhere for the whole of house supply and just leave the Extreme dedicated to the main system. I could still use Roon in the main system by using the Extreme as an end point rather than as Roon Core - does anybody do this?

The other benefit is that I could try ARC. I had no interest at all in this side of Roon until recently when they introduced the car play functionality which could, at least in theory, be the best in car music playback tool ever invented. There’s no way I would open the Extreme up to the outside world but I might consider it for a different Roon Core. Has anyone tried ARC?

My switch is scheduled for delivery tomorrow morning - feels like Christmas Eve here.
Please note that Roon leaves a sonic imprint on networked audio components when running. XDMS sounds best when no Roon server is running, which is in part why we have a single toggle switch in XDMS.

Although the new network card and switch will greatly reduce Roon's impact, it may still be commendable to disconnect/shut down any Roon cores on the network to obtain the very best sound.

While the Extreme could function as a Roon endpoint only if you installed the full version of Roon, this is not recommended. Also, I would argue that it's simplest to simply use the Roon core on the Extreme. Alternatively, it may be a good idea to use another server such as the Roon Nucleus, or perhaps a basic NAS and a simple streaming endpoint on the side for family/non-critical Roon listening.

Easy decision to stay as I am, thank you very much.

Be careful unpacking as the switch is much heavier than you might expect based upon its size. You wouldn’t want to drop it on your toes, that’s for sure!

I have a quick question......the photo shows the switch on the floor with no connections. The recommendations I thought was that the switch should not sit on the floor so I assume the photo was taken merely for illustration and not its final resting spot???

Hi Backo, its seems as though all the proper builds have to be in order on all devices, you should be fine now...BTW I like the country doctor reference!!
Hi John,
Ok so I’m flummoxed. New RJ45 direct from the router to the TES. Updated iOS and current Roon build. Still having the same problem of pausing with the Roon logo where the playback control bar is. I wait and then can start it again. I’ve been playing 192kHz 24bit or 96kHz 24bit files over Qobuz when available so I am wondering if anyone is having challenges streaming files this size when they have this issue.
Am currently playing 44kHz 16bit files to see if there’s an issue. BTW my download speeds are btwn 260.5 and 433.9 Mbps with Spectrum in NYC.

Can you play local files?

Your Tablet should be build 1219, your download speeds are fine. Mine was doing it with local files as well as streaming. I'm shooting in the dark here, perhaps power down your router for a few minutes and see if that corrects the issue...I did the same as Ed suggested, firstly I bypassed my M12 switch, but that was not the issue...Is your Extreme Roon build 1223? BTW when my issue occurred it was pausing with all Tracks, DSD,192, 96, etc...

Correct Steve. I thought the switch looked good set against the backdrop of the big Extreme, but I will place it on its own shelf in due course. I started to dissemble the rack earlier but have decided to leave it for now as I could feel my stitches straining. Bit frustrating, but another 2-3 days won’t hurt.

Mind you, the sheer weight and density of the thing is such that I reckon it should be pretty impervious to anything below minor earthquake level of intrusion.

I thought Emile suggested off the floor and provided a safe range for length of DAC cables, the shorter the better. Mine will sit on a shelf immediately under my Extreme with the shortest provided DAC

Did you get a 2 meter cable? That's what I ordered...

The thing to note when removing the PCIe card- there’s a little clip at the back of the slot on the extreme which you have to unlock first by toggling it upwards. I didn’t do it at first and spent a long time wondering what was stuck.
A picture of this clip would be nice. (This is the sort of thing that would drive me nuts trying to figure out why something is "stuck").

This clip at the base of the PCIe slot is what you need to toggle upwards (to unlock) before you can remove the old PCIe card. Toggle it down again (to lock) after you insert the new PCIe card.
Does it slip completely off or does it hinge?

@christian

Have all 100 units in the first batch been shipped? I have not received a tracking notification.
