Zero Distortion: Tango Time

I remember reading that Thomas Mayer likes to sit outside on his balcony and listen to his system, which is now in 'another room', when testing his designs. Sometimes we sit in the listening chair and lean forward and squint our eyes thinking we must catch some fleeting detail based on a change here or there but when the sound is right we can be across the hall and know it. My opinion anyway....

Tang- do you foresee using the Neumann on your 929 or the AS? Both probably ;). Eurodyne now thats exciting!
Well. I don't have a Neumann yet. These rare items are only occasionally pop up from time to time. Even so there is a lot of risk involved. I want to get one that has not been tampered which would be even more rare. I don't know if I will have the white one or the black one or if lucky have both. Once I have it it will be mounted on the 3012R. Neumann comes with EMT connector. I bought 4 3012R's from ddk. So I will ask him with a big please to switch with me his 3012R that he is using with his Neumann. I will use the cart with AS2000.

IMHO it is manufacturer duty to distribute and exhibit their products. Referring to products that are not available to listen in a dealer network in a poll post would be meaningless, even when joking. ;)

Why must we restrict the listening to within a dealer network? What difference does availability make? Listen to both of you are lucky enough and you will know. People have preferences and may be passionate about them. Doesn’t mean they can own them. That’s what dreams are made of.

Very exciting.....When can we expect them to be in your system?
In the process of making baffles for them. Certain type of wood is being ordered. No fancy expensive wood needed though. Hopefully I will have them singing in my room by March. It is not just the Eurodyn. More of a project theatre horn system with subs and amps. I have a professional doing this for me.

Someone should start a poll in the vintage versus modern speaker thread for Wilson WAMM or Magico M9 versus Siemens Bionor, big WE, or Klangfilm Eurodyn. Which solicits more passion and why? Legends proven over time versus the current SOTA.

Guys, as thread owner, please no repeat of other threads on this thread. I also don't like the classification above, it assumes all are at similar levels, and it is a choice. There are others too, both vintage and modern.

Peter, I like vintage, I would like those with no exposure to get so to horns and vintage, as they are tougher to audition, but soliciting passion means nothing. People are passionate about Raidho, dCS, wilson, magico, and duos. They should find a place like Tang did and listen. Tang does not go out to listen much, and yet he managed to find one, surely others can too.

*And* the WAMMs *and* M9 (under favorable circumstances)? That was my point.
WAMMS multiple times, m9 released only very recently. Anyway I thought you were talking about the vintage speakers Peter mentioned.

Yes sir. the neumann is already a number. You probably know that only 900 of them were built. is as rare as winning the lottery. there was still a small series of dst 62 b produced according to the number of pieces is not known to me. $ 5,000-9,000 in good condition.

Fantastic! Congrats Tang.

In the german AAA forum, someone asked GeorgNeumann, Berlin, an official statement from them. NST 62 b, which are copied in small numbers, look different on the underside. If that's true, I have not a guarantee, the largest number I've seen was 961.

in download area they actually have a document for all products, but i can no longer find the dst 62.:(
You need a emt headshell to drive a Neumann, works perfect with RMG 309i Ortofon arround ~ 6.0g Vtf

Great news congrats.

I could enjoy that and maybe learn something. Perhaps a thread for Vintage videos, you could start.

What would be helpful to me is if someone posts a video/audio of vintage speakers they could include the speaker name and model number along with various drivers. If amps are mentioned, it will be helpful if the amp name/model nbr and tubes were included.

I read the various many threads where knowledgeable people discuss horns and vintage and typically a far amount of shorthand is used - which is understandable. Yet for someone without familiarity it can be difficult to follow. In the suggested thread some accompanying basic identifying info would be great. With the emphasis on the video/audio recording.

Wow - at first I thought you were kidding us - this is so outrageous - in a good way. Do you plan to keep your Lamm gear for this or do you not know yet?
Of course. The Lamm will match the Eurodyn as well ddk's Bionor. This is also why I choose these speakers.

There are many videos on vintage speakers and drivers on the forum, from WE, Bionor, Altec, JBL, TAD.

I would suggest keeping discussion details of drivers, e.g. Altec 288g vs H vs K vs the 290 or 291 series, or JBL 2441, 2440, 375, 2482, 2450 etc, separate. If one likes Altec or JBL or such, they can always get into the details of these. There is a whole forum dedicated to the Lansing Heritage (Altec, JBL, and TAD) called audioheritage.

Imo people should just audition horns and note down what they like. These are all very different. Many horns sound good or bad due to the design first, the driver comes next, i.e. you can put an excellent midrange driver with digitally active bass that does not align to the top and it can sound poor.

But again, let's not turn this into a DIY thread as there are already many on the subject. It should predominantly stay a Tang system focused thread with periodic offshoots and in humor, anything goes.

Imo this is too disperate. I was thinking not so much of discussion but a video with equipment documentation. Consolidation. When I say vintage I meant vintage products, not DIY. Saying "just audition..." is not what was in mind. I make this suggestion from your post - you are a main advocate - the idea to be educational via video samples. Ideally, acoustic music with substance. Pointers to existing can work.

There are many non believers in video. Just my gut that if a thread had been only horn videos or vintage videos, people would have scrolled down them saying all sound crap compared to their system at home. I therefore started female vocal videos, male vocals, rock, orchestral, etc, so that these would mix up horn, non horn, modern, vintage. People could then see which, at a video level, rather than comparing to the system in Al's room, was better.

Unfortunately very few non horn posted.

I have posted a lot of non horn videos with my former Magico system. Stehno has posted many many non horn videos, but these are all overwhelmed by the title wave of your great horn videos. And Thomask may have the record with his new Altecs. I am encouraging Jeff to start posting his Hartsfields. And the only Bionor videos are on my visit to Utah thread. The only other Boston area videos that will ever be posted are of Andy’s Soundlabs. Al and I will hear that system in a couple weeks.

Al has heard them all and probably has the most comments

The challenge Bonzo is understanding both the shortcomings and the potential of a system video. Of course it will not sound as good as the actual system in the room, but much can be gleamed. Comparing one video to a different live system is not the point but even that can be humbling if one listens carefully.

I generally listen for the overall impression, the larger picture. Is the tone right, is the sound balanced? Is there beauty and life or is it grey and sterile? Does it sound alive with energy? These are easy.

More difficult but still possible is to hear black backgrounds, staging information and resolution through the digital low quality replay.

That special something still comes through on my video of the Vitavox playing Savitri at David’s even though they are not set up in the corners even. The beauty of the voices and the spatial cues as the singers walk on the stage is there. And it will sound different on different system videos. This stuff does come through. So does the information that tells the listener that the sound is lifeless because the room or system is overdamped.

People may be surprised or shocked to learn that I sent videos to David for impressions when I was doing my experiments with toe in, room treatments, and cartridge adjustments. I heard the improvements and recorded them to share progress reports. It all came through.
