Digital or analog? Breuninger says... and asks what says you?

Sorry rockitman, the information you want is in post #71, i know it's not your fault you came into this discussion a little late and NO i realy don't miss the analog playback, if it's good for YOU then it's alright but it's simply not for me, so i guess i'm not an audiophile, to bad for me.

Audiophile ? We all are. I don't subscribe to the latest definition. I listened to digital 100% from 84-2010. I'm glad I saw the light and stopped wasting years of not hearing music repro at the highest level. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make them drink as they say. I'm glad your happy. I know I am. Cheers !

At least we agree that you have to crank it as it was recorded so low. I never heard any life to this recording which was the same as the McCartney recording I also purchased from HDtracks and never listen to. Since you are stuck with the digits and the digits only, you won't be able to hear what the recording really sounds like on analog. And I couldn't disagree with you more that if the 24/192 recording was used as the source for an LP reissue that people would want it. If the recording stinks when it is digital, it's not going to get less stinky because you converted it back to analog.

Because a recording doesn't use any compression doesn't mean that recording should sound like it has no dynamic range and that is how I feel about this dull, lifeless recording. I'm happy for you if this recording is another slice of digital heaven in your world.

Mike the VPI record machine does to digitals' noiseless claims what the hand held Stinger missles did to the Russian fighter jets in the Afghan war. I am sure your records are dirt and static free. I can only guess how many unplayable CDs there are out there. I was listening to some music on UTube at the library. Honestly it was skipping just like a dirty/scratched CD.

the VPI 16.5 RCM is just sooo 90's ya know....too much suck and not enough blow. and dirty lips to boot.:):):):):):):)

these days it's Audio Systeme Desk or Loricraft PRC4 Dlx.

at least that's how i roll.....

For me, the final straw was on the mid 80's 4 out of every 5 records I was buying was either warped, or had massive inner groove distortion.

While audiophile, boutique pressings have taken care of these issues today, they come at unacceptable price..$50 for 60 year old Coltrane, or various Blue Note recordings?

Insane.

And the kicker is even THEN there is a known number of warped and noisy pressings, even with the attention to detail.

Warps aren't an issue any more with ring clamps or vacuum hold down. :)

....and/or the Furutech LP flattener.

I was open with my analog source, could you please return the favor with your best digital source you owned Thank You

True but VPI proved the point and does the job for us commoners. Smile

i loved my 16.5 and probably cleaned 5000 Lps with it over the 9 years i used it. i tried to used it in the hallway outside my current room and in that smaller space it was too loud; so it forced me to consider others.

My Ps audio perfect wave mark 2 connected via I2s interface does a great job and is more than competitive with the best that cost 3 times as much. If I felt it was worth it, I would have a Dcs stack or an Msb diamond. My analog software versions of all the music I listen to kills the digital counterpart for the most part. I love Led Zeppelin. How's that treating you with cd ? For me it was horrid...that is led zep and many other 70's classic rock bands that I love.

Christian-You have to remember that for some of the digit lovers if they hear a single pop or tick, that's it! The analog medium is terrible and not worth their time when they can listen to the pristine silence of digital. Out goes the baby with the bath water! You can't talk people out of these types of hardcore feelings and we shouldn't try. After all, digit lovers have been enjoying perfect digital sound since 1982 and now we have some who claim to love the less than perfect sound of MP-3s.

First, make that 1992, ten years later, or so.

Two, make that not perfect, but simply; adequately listenable & pleasurable (same for LPs, but started before somehow).

Freedom is just picking from your available options. For most that is some form of digital recording played through a horrible digital playback deivce.

For me, Freedom (Musical Freedom) is a Sensorial (Hearing) Ecstasy of the highest level;
in both emotional and mystical planes.

From the very start of this thread NOBODY as said that the digital sound was perfect but let me tell you that in 1984 as soon as this was heard digital playback started to sound pretty darn good and dead quiet, the Meridian MCD was good but the MCD PRO was even better and that's where it realy started, NO MORE ANALOG CULT for me.

---Video is Digital (no more VCRs with VHS or Beta tapes; and no more analog laser discs either).
Today we are in the Digital High Res Audio & Video era (Blu-ray, 4K soon coming, 48fps soon coming, SACD, DVD-A, DAD, SAD, Hi Res Audio download up to 352/32, XRCD, XCD, XMCD, Digital R.a.d.i.o., and all that Digital Jazz from Digital Audio/Video Servers, and all the other Digital formats including USB, Internet stations, blah-blah-blah ...). ...Legends ...

The only Analog remnants are: Vinyl, R2R, and Analog R.a.d.i.o.. And Cassette tapes for few.
And me, the only missing Analog format in my arsenal is R2R caliber.

And because I listen to a lot of Analog R.a.d.i.o., right now I am 50/50 (June 2012) in my habitual music formats listening practices.

And that's that! :b

I fixed that for you....

---Andre, the 80s weren't so kind digitally for me; I still was gaining more fun listening to my analog albums. :b
But both analog and digital formats were full of crap recordings, to be perfectly sure.

Meridian CD players from that era, yes I remember very well. So Micromega ones. And Denon. ...Mirage, Image, Energy, B&W, KEF, Paradigm, ... loudspeakers.

But today is today, and yesterday was yesterday... :b
And today (for some of us, me included) is still yesterday! :D
...Still trying to adapt, musically & spiritually. :b

You are dead wrong about 1992. Do some research before you make statements like that. The CD didn't hit the market in 1992, it was 1982.

-----I meant before it starts to sound reasonable Mark. :b

* The first CD player in North America was introduced in 1983.

Sorry if you didn't catch my meaning.
