Taiko Audio SGM Extreme : the Crème de la Crème

Pardon my gushing, but I needed to chime into this post with my own excitement for the Taiko Extreme server. I received my pair of demo units just before Christmas and have been burning them in almost around the clock since receipt, one paired to a LampizatOr Golden Gate 2 and the other with a LampizatOr Baltic 3.

Initial impressions were that this server is doing something dramatically different than I'd experienced previously. My reference system took on an almost hyper dynamic character with layering and imaging I hadn't previously experienced. The sound was not (and still isn't) fully stable as it would vary in quality from this point, but even during burn in dips, it's remained remarkably far ahead of the server pack.

Presently the hyper dynamic quality has been tamed and I'm enjoying an extraordinarily analog presentation with musical flow, pace, drama and emotion--the intangibles that usually get lost among audiophile adjectives.

I could not be more excited about the pairing and look forward to working with Emile as a dealer to bring further exposure to these incredible servers.

It's the real deal Fred. Congrats on becoming a dealer

Delighted to have you onboard Fred. I’m thoroughly enjoying our resident Lampizator Pacific!

Wonder if any other extreme owners are having an issue with songs ending early. Cutting off before the song ends. Sometimes when less then half way through a song. Very annoying. Is it Roon? I have no other internet issues. I have down load speeds of 600Mbps. Thanks for solutions.

Nothing like that here, and I've got very slow "high speed" internet. DSL with a blazing 10Mbps down.

I can independently confirm that Steve has slow internet (sorry Steve ;)

@Koegz Are you using HQP from Roon? I've had issues with some filters in HQP where if you have a sampling rate change, track transitions don't always go well

Our cat Tamarind enjoying the warmth of a P300 power regenerator used with my current NUC.
He is very excited about the Taiko Extreme that will (at least temporarily) be put in that same spot on the floor.

Steve.
Please get a better internet Connection if you can.
I was on 15 mbps than 30 mbps, 50, 100, 200 .
Unfortunate the faster the better for extreme.
As far as I know Emile tested upto 10 Gbps.

Hi Emile,
is there a sweet spot for Extreme, I mean for use with Qobuz?
Thanks

Matt

@Taiko Audio

i know windows can be a little strange sometimes.
can the extreme read an EXT3 or EXT4 HDD on the usb3 input?
all my computers/systems are linux and i'll want to copy all my music over
to internal storage on the extreme.

once the music is copied over the first time, i'll plan to keep my music and backup drives in sync
using BeyondCompare. i don't expect any problems there as it seems to handle everything i throw at
it on my home network.

It's best to use an external HDD formatted with NTFS or FAT32 if you want to be able to use it on Windows and Linux. FAT32 has size limitations, so I guess NTFS is your best choice.

Alternatively you can create a network share and transfer the files over the network.

do you know it won't work with EXT3? if i have to create a new drive, format it and copy 7TB so i can copy that 7TB drive to the extreme, i might as well just transfer it over the (slower) network...........not an acceptable solution here (thanks for the suggestion though)

back when i had one remaining windows pc (for doing our taxes), i used Ext2Fsd to easily read linux drives from inside windows.
if the current extreme cannot do that, perhaps Emile could install Ext2Fsd, i could copy my HDD, then remove Ext2Fsd from the extreme.

once i have the music on board, i think BeyondCompare will handle both windows and linux drives over the network, and home LAN network speed is sufficient for updating the core music library.

Beyondcompare seems to be a very useful software to have. So you have to install in your extreme? I always worried that installing program in extreme will affect the sound quality.

As far as I know the OS on the Extreme does not support EXT3. There are of course tools to make this work like the one you mentioned. And it's also probably not a good idea to install any of them. Trying to copy 7 TB over the network would take good 20+ hours. Hence, my suggestion to reformat your external drives as a happy medium.
Anyhow, I didn't mean to get in the middle of that, just chimed in with my opinion. Cheers.

That should be no problem. BeyondCompare would not reside in the extreme, so that is a non- issue.
I run it on my main linux pc and use it to sync music files on other machines and NAS. I believe their are also versions for windows and mac. You can probably download a trial version and see if you like it. I have used it for a long time, going back to when I allowed microsoft products in my life :). When I moved to linux, they transferred my license to the new operating system.

I agree that we absolutely don't want *anything* extraneous running on the extreme. However, a good solution for me would be Ext2Fsd, do the initial transfer of 7TB of music, then a *complete* removal of Ext2Fsd from the extreme.

How about exFAT? Would that work?

I have a 1Gbps internet connection, faster does have some audible advantages when using Roon, we have a few customers with access to a 10Gbps connection reporting another step up. With TAS however the benefit is limited to reduced track loading times.
