Taiko Audio SGM Extreme : the Crème de la Crème

Hi All, here is a schematic representation of the TACDA PCIe card in its initially proposed fixed-output guise,
and in its revised Modular guise. Note that, for the analog output option, the DAC itself will be contained on the Daughter Board.

So it looks as if what will be released as a Taiko DAC will still be confined to a small part of the overall board real estate available. Is this correct?

I’m guessing the answer to this question would be, because it sounds better.

Similar to oldmustangs question above, if all of the other versions have the DAC on the card, why would the analog out be the only Version that has the DAC on the daughterboard?

IIUC, the analog out is the one and only version with a DAC

So the new PCI modular card will have an output (connector to be revealed) for the new Taiko proprietary interface and also the daughter card connector with different outputs to choose from. Correct?
IIUC, only the daughter boards will have outputs.

Matt
Indeed, only the Daughter Board will have outputs. The connector that is yet to be revealed is the one that will be used to transport the new proprietary Taiko TACDD format signal.

Indeed, only the version with the analog outputs will have the DAC on board. The DAC requires only a minimum of real estate.

So, the Daughter board will contain either a digital output or a DAC with an analog output.

Yes, that is correct for now. Nevertheless, your comment regarding a super-charged DAC section has been noted:)

Well not necessarily. We can surely look into expanding options if it proves to be popular. We could even make a multi PCIe card setup. Slot 4 is not in use in any Extreme afaik for example, slot 5 is used by the UB card, slot 6 by the VGA connector which is almost never actually used, as good as redundant so we could even make a triple card setup, and each of these cards could have daughter boards, and then we could make external add-on boxes, but then we'd have become actual DAC manufacturers which we want to stay away from. I do prefer to spend our R&D resources on improving source and interface, where there still are strange new worlds to explore, where we can seek out new life, to boldly go where no man has gone before.

"Make it so ... and ... engage!"

So two slots are occupied?

This is not to do with PCI slots.

The "to be revealed connector type" is for the new TACDD format. TACDD is a new Taiko-proprietary method to send audio over a cable. That's what's meant with "format", so we're not talking about anything physical. This connection will be one of the options for the modular TACDA card.

Look at it this way:

- S/PDIF format has its associated RCA or BNC connectors
- AES/EBU format has its XLR connectors
- Taiko TACDD format connectors are yet to be revealed.

I am more interested in knowing if the switch is still on schedule to ship by the end of February.

Me too:cool:

Im also interested in how many Extreme users will give up their outboard DAC for this option. Perhaps a new poll

Well, unless I can audition the new board in my system first with a full refund if I don't like it better than my current DAC, I'll never get to that decision point.

* Extreme is on order

This is a huge directional shift...Mid-Stream...At least it seems...

For people who will change their current DAC...

Emile has stated that the internal DAC “equates” to a $10-$20k DAC. If someone owns a Horizon I doubt they will go in this direction.
