Socialism, wealth *re*distribution, liberal, conservative... It's fascinating to read the complete absence of objectivity in these posts (just like it is with respective to issues in our own little corner of the world, e.g., analog, digital, solid state, tubes, etc.). When you wear pink tinted skiing sunglasses, well, shock, surprise, everything looks pink. Take off the sunglasses and see the real world? Haven't seen it in this thread. A mirror check is in order.

---- Perhaps it's because in America people lives on edges, cliffs, and precipices?
...With all those natural disasters, the poor versus the rich, jobs' scarcity, fear, and all that jazz.

As edorr eloquently explained a few pages back, the meaning of the term "socialist" is different to what is being thrown around this election. It is being thrown about as a pejorative, same as the word "liberal" is a swear word in some circles. As he says, all countries redistribute wealth, otherwise the gap between rich and poor would be massive. You guys know that the reason our modern democracies are stable is because the gap between rich and poor is lower, and everyone has higher living standards as a result?

Keith you are correct, at least in theory. But, the income disparity between rich and poor has grown considerably in the US and the lower and middle income groups have not enjoyed a higher living standard recently, due to the economic crunch.

Of course. We have seen a massive redistribution of wealth towards the rich over the last few decades. All progressive taxation does is mitigate some of this trend. Have the rich become smarter, harder working relative to the middle class and poor during this period, or are there other forces at work? You make the call.

As an aside, I just returned from a week in Punta Mita, Mexico and I was engaged in a conversation with some Mexican people at the resort as to taxation in Mexico. I hope that I don't misquote what I heard but simply put, taxation across the board is a simple 15% tax. Employers submit a record of annual earnings for all citizens and once a year they get a bill from the federal government for 15%. No deductions, CPA's, accounting loop holes or countless hundreds of pages in a tax return.

Perhaps Flez or others from Mexico might comment

Didn't Steve Forbes suggest this when he was a candidate years ago

This is consistent with my (only half joking) observation the GOP model for America is a third world country, and for the Dems it is Sweden.

So much wrong here it hurts ..... :)

All this socialist interfering in the market takes away a lot of drive for people to make something of their lives

BTW the grand europe /euro idea was a socialist one , kinda like together were strong and one country will pay for the other??? , we all know how that ended (will end ) :D

The european integration project was deeply flawed and doomed to fail. This is coming from a Liberal European, who majored in economics. However, there was nothing inherently socialist about it. At least nothing more socialist than North Italy subsidizing the South and affluant US states subsidizing Alabama.

And I'm not mentioning all the lies, and illegal contributions, corruptions at all levels of our governments, jazz-jazz-jazz ...

We are simply slaves of our own systems, without equalizing (managing) them properly...

How long till we finally wake up? ...Till we realise that all men and women are equal, and that if you have access to power (money & decision making), you have the greatest responsabilities towards all your brothers and sisters from everywhere on this planet of ours, Earth?

How long till we all live in harmony and stop killing in the names of ....?

Finally we are back to music:

That's why I'm moving to Texas, Win. :)

Figures, and I thought I had crossed a milestone! :D

I thought this was interesting.

Abe Katsman of the Times of Israel writes of the Romney landslide among American voting in Israel:

The Presidential election results are in. Well, at least the votes from Americans in Israel. Not one to keep readers in suspense, I’ll reveal the most important numbers up front: Gov. Mitt Romney received 85%–85%!–of the vote; President Obama managed only 14.3%. This, according to exit polling just released by iVoteIsrael, the non-partisan group promoting and facilitating voting by U.S. citizens currently in Israel. Their statistics reveal some fascinating results. More importantly, these results have implications for the outcome of next week’s election.

Err No,

Not the same and too technically convoluted to really discuss the wonton Dynamics involved without serious thread derailment ..:)

Quick Synapsis :

The south's wealth was robbed and the euro failed to achieve the required petro economy due to Saddam being ousted, the euro died in 2002 , you are experiencing the rigor-mortis...

Take a guess where a lot of middle class welfare in the USA goes. If you guessed "tax break for mortgages", you are 100% correct. Now, some might argue that this is a good thing, because it encourages people to buy homes instead of rent. However, there is plenty of evidence to suggest that ANY type of assistance for housing actually distorts the housing market. If the cost of finance goes down, the price of the house goes up to compensate. In the end, what this does is shift money away from the government (they lose the money they could have made from tax), shift money away from the home buyer (because of the distorted housing market), and shift money into the hands of real estate developers.

In Australia, there is something called a "first home buyers grant", where people who have never owned homes are given between $7000 - $15000 to help them purchase homes. Result - within a couple of years, real estate prices rapidly increased such that housing no longer became affordable for first home buyers. The well-intentioned grant resulted in a shift of money towards housing developers and people who already owned homes, creating a market distortion.

Some people here want to get rid of it, but it would be political suicide for either of our major parties to consider it.

I believe that reducing inequality in society is important (i.e. I am ... shock, horror ... a socialist!!!), but poorly thought-out but well-intentioned policies like the ones in your country and mine are not the way to do it.
