Taiko Audio SGM Extreme : the Crème de la Crème

How does a 12V LPS fare with the Edgerouter? Its requirements state 24VDC. Have you had any issues with an underpowered LPS?

9 to 24v

I use 9, no issues. Thinking the lower voltage the lower noise, cooler, etc.

Adding a DC cable to an LPS for my EdgeRouter X-SFP tomorrow. Exchanged a few emails with Emile about recommended V given the X-SFP specs as I do not want to 'damage' the Extreme as it is currently connected directly to the Edge.o_O He suggested, while other Vs may work, going with a 12V LPS as it could probably be repurposed most easily for another device down the road if needed, so I went with that.

Re: Audio Nervosa, ha, so true and may be exacerbated by being cooped up. While I am a '3' leaner I found a couple tracks, like @marty, where I preferred '7' to tame the highs. Definitely seems track and volume dependent. Minor differences though and now I am trying to recapture all the worms and put them back in the can to toss it. I'll stick with '3' unless we learn that 'default' actually somehow fluctuates or adjusts for something, as I sure was enjoying 'default' just a bit ago as well. Take care everyone

I've spent 7 years getting my Zus subs settings just right. Another 7 years on this? Um...

Get to work now. Go through your entire music catalog, listening carefully to what numeral sounds best with each recording. Label your entire collection per optimal #. It may take some 7 years, but are you an audiophile or not?

I thought Leebens worked at PSAudio.
I thought Silberman was the Roon sales rep and that he left earlier this year. Not sure if he was let go or left on his own....

Danny Duali is one of those "I'm the smartest guy in the room" kinda of guy and I'll bet not easy to work with, but who knows?

I was told Silberman was "bought out" and was not happy about it.

I totally agree. We have all been doing A/B tests between settings 3-8 rather than against default. I was also enjoying default. I totally i agree that this could be dependent on so many things and the changes although there fluctuate or as you say change even with recording.
if there is something to be said about default it’s a set it and forget it whereas this other can be tuned to individual satisfaction or even to the recording

Come on Mike, you touch it.
I’m not gonna touch it.

in these situations i wait for Emile to give me a direction. he is the only one who has messed with my Extreme, and no reason to change now.

i'm entirely happy with what i'm hearing so i have no need for chaos.

I completely understand.
i’m just hoping someone tells us if that dialog box, in the Roon advanced menu that says “load defaults “, is where people are finding The settings they are adjusting?
It is just a little scary, I don’t want to touch that button and then have to re-configure my entire Roon set up.

It's amazing that this is becoming such "a thing".

The setting that is being discussed is the setting in Device Setup>>>>Advanced settings>>>>Master Clock Priority.

It has nothing to do the "load default setting".

There is no chaos. Just leave the setting alone and enjoy your music if you don't want to mess with it. FOR MANY others that want to click on the different settings and see if in their systems and their ears they hear a difference and prefer one setting over another there is no problem in doing that. If you can't tell a difference then put it back to default and leave it alone.

Can I ask what means "Clock Master Priority " in technical terms? I fail to understand its meaning from the Roon explanation.

Hi Micro,
I am sorry to not be able to provide you with a comprehensive explanation of the functionality other than what roon provided in their knowledge base.
Here's a response from roon to a similar question, taken from here:
" Correct. This setting only effects grouped zone playback. Regardless of the setting used here (default or highest) there will be no difference unless grouped with another zone."
It should in no imaginable way affect sound in any shape or form, this does support the case that some audiophiles exhibit confirmation bias or even auto suggestion. OF COURSE I AM COMPLETLY OBJECTIVE AND NEVER SUFFER FROM THIS :p

Emailed you a video :)

On a separate note Emile, may I ask when the “Mini’ will be available and relevant details, next week I am going to have a listen and drool over an Extreme where the guys at my local dealer have said it’s the best they have heard by far, truly like listening to the best of vInyl

@adamaley I have tried my Edge Router X-SFP with five different voltages and as it uses DC/DC converters inside the power usage will be almost the same despite the voltage and produce the same heat.

These numbers are with SFP port and 3 LAN ports in use

9V 0,32A = 2,9W
12V 0,24A = 2,9W
15V 0,20A = 3W
19V 0,16A = 3,05W
24V 0,13A = 3,1W

Very little difference in power usage

Hi RGMD11,

Which dealer is that?

As for the "Mini", it's hard to say, unfortunately the world is starting to run low on electronics parts. Several items like microcontrollers, mosfets and capacitors we need for the mini are simply out of stock right now.

Those are typical numbers for a pretty high efficiency switching DC-DC converter.

Is the area you are configuring the tab in the lower left-hand corner that says “load defaults”?
I am afraid to touch that button for fear that it will reset all my settings back to default.

You have to scroll down on that page and then you'll see a "show advanced" line which you can click, that will allow you to scroll down further to access the settings discussed.

@Taiko Audio & @tsaett
I installed the latest BIOS 6102 on my DIY server with Asus SAGE motherboard and a new setting popped up in the Performance Tuning section (I guess it was added in BIOS 5701) - Power Balancer.

It's interesting what it does. Give it a try if you haven't. Obviously the Taiko Extreme is tweaked completely different than my build, so I will not try to suggest what might or might not work on the Extreme. Just pointing it out.

Hi Nenon,

I imagine that might be an especially welcome option if you're running Linux with the performance power governor which would otherwise tend to push all cores to the maximum frequency at all times. (It's new in this version, the previous 6003 lacks that option).

P.S. How are you liking your build so far?

Hello Emille,
Ultimate Audio in Lisbon where I live, Miguel and the guys there are fantastic, very accommodating and always a real pleasure to deal with, unlike many high end dealers in my experience.....I have heard some amazing systems in their rooms.

Fingers crossed you are up and running soon, guess my options are to wait a year or two for a used Extreme or in all likelihood get the Mini, I have also thought of a used SGM Evo, but not sure how far that is behind the Extreme/Mini !, just want to find a great match for my DAC which I think is easily a match at the price point and if not better than a few other three letter DAC manufacturers (one either side of the pond) that I have.

regards
Glenn
