Taiko Audio SGM Extreme : the Crème de la Crème

I plan to put the Taiko switch and router side-by-side on top of a very expensive and elegant shelf -- my Taiko Extreme. Hopefully, that is decent enough. . .

Me too Steve. Side by side on the shelf right under the Extreme

Hello to all. I hope everyone had a very Happy Father's Day. I am putting up this post as an update to a previous post several weeks ago to which I am getting daily inquiries as well as definite RSVP's. As many of you recall it was everyone's hope that the Extreme BPS would have been shown at Munich recently but the ongoing supply chain issues precluded that from happening. To that extent it was my goal after discussions with Emile that a global soft launch of the product could be done sometime in the near future at my house. When that was posted I have been getting inquiries from countless members all over the USA as well as from the EU and recently from Brazil all of whom want to attend.

So once again all I can say is that the supply chain parts for Emile and Taiko to build this much awaited component is somewhere on a slow boat from China making its way to Emile and that was well over 3 months ago. It seems now that Emile is hoping for a target date in to the 4th quarter of this year but apart from that all I can say with certainty isn that this will be happening and I ask members to stay calm as everyone is invited. The plan was to do this over a weekend much the same as I did last year at my house for the Lampizator soft launch of the Horizon. I am putting this information up as everyone who wants to come is asking when.......This again all boils down to the ship docking in Holland and Emile being able to craft his design and then to find time in his busy schedule to fly across the pond and the continental USA to visit here in Southern California. I say to all who want to come, my home is open to everyone and it would be wonderful to have a huge turnout for Emile and Taiko. If the demand proves even larger than expected I am prepared (if Emile is) to keep the event open long enough so that everyone can have a listen.

My other hope and this is only me thinking out loud and I have discussed this with Emile regarding his upcoming new interface which just might be finished and licensed by the time of the event and just perhaps the interface could also be included in the soft launch. To that extent there is a slight chance that even Lukasz might fly in from Poland and if so, and if possible I am dreaming that Lukasz could rewire the usb port on my Horizon with the new Taiko interface. This is just a thought and everything now will come down to Emile's schedule. We had about 45 people at the Horizon soft launch last year and so far there is at least that and likely more who have expressed a desire to attend. Once a date has been set by Emile I will put up information here in this thread and people can reach out to me to attend. It is my hope as well that Ed will be able to attend

They will be staying with me . To those attending, there are very nice hotels that are affordable all within a few miles of my house

Thank you for making this possible Steve!

Indeed the updated arrival time of the cells are now set at the 30th of September. Less relevant is they’re not coming from China, more relevant is we switched our order to a newer type of cell which recently became available with a ~50% increase in performance reducing the amount of cells we need to use which in turn allows the single box BPS Extreme at a lower then previously projected cost and some other new exciting developments we’ll disclose in due time. These cells are not available in regular retail channels and are build to order. However they do have to come by ship which creates the largest delay as they are not allowed to be shipped by air. Our completed products will be allowed to ship by air (by freight plane only) confirming to certain stringent safety standards.

Always cutting-edge this ingenious Mr. Bok. I like it!

I knew I could entice you to drop a pearl along the way. The wait is long but worth it. No one is complaining. Life is good. I’m excited to meet members from everywhere on the globe

Dear Emile,

Great news!

Regarding "Our completed products will be allowed to ship by air (by freight plane only) confirming to certain stringent safety standards.", my guess is that a large number of clients will prefer the cheapest one-box option, which is using the existing enclosure, and do the upgrade without shipping the Taiko Extreme to Europe. So I hope there is a way to ship the BPS upgrade kit by air. If not, provide some options one can use for the BPS upgrade kit.
Cheers,

The exciting thing about this event is that so far it seems all who have replied are existing Extreme owners who are considering BPS. So unlike your standard audio show this will be one in which everyone has a common interest.

I thought there were 2 one box options
1. use existing Extreme chassis

2. I thought there was a one box version which had a foot print only slightly wider and deeper than the original but weighed 168 pounds IIRC.

I have the same understanding as you do. Also that option 1 is cheaper, and option 2 has to sound better (given that is has a new chassis, and is more expensive).

Update on the Router:

The first presale batch of 100 routers is now sold out. They will be shipped with a redesigned PCB with integrated Wi-Fi. We do lose 1 of the 2 USB ports due to needing the PCIe data lines.

The next batch of routers will be available to ship from the 2nd of October. This seems like a long time but it’s quite a sophisticated design being a completely motherboard designed from scratch with CPU / memory / storage etc all not available immediately either.

This could actually serve as a complete server which would typically sell at much higher prices.

While on that topic. We have been receiving questions again on why we’re not offering a dual Extreme server setup like some others. To answer that question we have to zoom in on the 2 key benefits from a dual server setup being:

1) separating server core processing from endpoint processing
2) “shielding” the amount of network processing the endpoint has to perform as it can be on an “isolated” audio network

Now you can indeed accomplish this by purchasing 2 extreme servers but IMHO this is a suboptimal and unnecessarily expensive solution.

1) An extreme already has a, imho, “smarter” way to separate processing in a core - endpoint scenario employing 2 physical CPUs.

Which reduces the benefit to:

2) creating an audio exclusive network for the endpoint for which we have designed the Router as this does that for the entire setup, core and endpoint.

Further to this we have designed the switch to allow for a lower noise / higher efficiency interface over RJ45 to be used.

The total package price of Router / Switch / Extreme server might be steep, but it’s still cheaper then buying 2 Extreme servers, and, again IMHO a somewhat cleverer approach with merits beyond just stacking servers.

These newer cells combined with some other changes allow for the Extreme to be retrofitted with a BPS in its current chassis. There is no more need for, nor a merit to, a larger chassis.

A “DIY” upgrade kit will have to be a 2 chassis option I’m afraid. But we have some ideas to make this all pretty painless, as in an exchange program of sorts.

Probably optional, it should be available at that time though.
So for those who want to order and have the new interface, have you figured out options as to what we do with the Taiko USB card. I assume there will be a new interface card to replace the USB card

Hi all, here's an updated version of the BPS Summary doc. Please note that some details are not yet unveiled and more info will come in due time. As always, I will update the doc as new info comes along. The latest version can always be found on the Downloads Page on the Taiko Audio website.

The new Interface card will not replace the USB card but it will be offered as another option.
