Wow - I think the same of that Appalachian Spring Suite, played by Russians no less! And the tune that comes before it - Shosty's Festive Overture is fantastic. Glasnost!

Sheffield Lab TLP-25

Yes, this was one of the Sheffield Labs albums that I had back then (got it shortly after it’s release from memory) thanks Tim. I was obviously too young (and possibly stupid) back in the late 80’s to even question the crowd of Russians wading through the watermelons on the cover... young audiophiles, just too busy listening seriously and critically to even notice the strangely obvious lol.

I like Rachmaninoff a lot so I keep buying trying to find good decent pressings of pieces I like. Picture below is an example of modern records that are no good. I feel nothing..numb listening to these records...no erection..two tablets viagra wouldn't help . They are just quieter but took all the life out of music.

I think on classical either buy originals or some decent audiophile labels otherwise better off setup a good digital front.

Here is a low budget Russian recording of Emile Gilels concert on some Rachmaninoff Preludes. The guy was really hammering the keyboard. My EMT phono has two VU meters. They seldom got pass half way. Yet it is loud. It sounds very transparent but very un-sophisticated. Almost home made low budget like. Unlike old British Decca which sounds professionally excellent. But many of Russian recordings are really decent..good home made natural sound. And the Russian Melodiya has all the Russian musicians on pieces I like.

This particular record looks mint but has annoying clicks. Sound like fire burning hay. But the live performance is good so actually bought another one to see if I get lucky second time.

I feel bad in that I suggested the Daniil Trifonov recordings (digital via streaming) but I do find his performances of Rachmaninov are both compelling and engaging. Apologies if in the end the resultant vinyl pressings simply just aren’t that good Tang. Disappointing to hear.

Nice, I ordered a couple myself. But I can't guarantee they're both the same exact performances because.... well russian...

While I don't proclaim any erection sentiments, I do understand being really underwhelmed with so many performances. I have numerous good quality recordings that just aren't the most interesting things to hear.

Come on Tao. No apology pls. I listened in youtube I liked how he played. They are just bad pressings. I bet the recordings were meant to play on digital and sound much better on that.

Tang :)

Yes, true but it is still disappointing. It would just be good if artists today were better served better by all mediums.

Taking the life out of great music is not technically a crime... but perhaps it should be :)

I have several DG recordings of Trifonov - the FLAC versions sound really good in my system, with a good feeling of the piano (and pianist) being in the room. However I have been told that the 24-bit/96kHz files played in an adequate system are better sounding than the vinyls.

I have an adequate system Micro so that is overall quite good.

Tango,

Since you like the romantic, moving kind of pianism (I'm guessing here), perhaps you should try some of the modern composers/players, like Niels Frahm and Oláfur Arnalds. I believe their vinyl doesn't suck, and you can probably preview their music on YouTube.
I'm playing their collaboration album (Frahm and Arnalds) right now, called "Trance Frendz", and it's gorgeous (not the LP though).

Hi. Asiufy. I only now realize I like romantic. Eversince I had a son, my sentimental gland has been overly sensitive. Two days ago I was watching Under the Tuscan Sun. The movie stimulated my romantic gland enough I wanted to move to Italy with my family when I retire. May be become Gian's neighbor. Even Korean series often put me in tears these days. I found a leaflet below at a hospital and it made me think if such thing could happen to men.

Anyway thanks for a recommendation on modern composers.

Tang :)

Emil Gilels? Russian labels?

I thought this 'heroic' cover - complete with 'Stalin hair' - truly Russian.

Iirc, Gilels hammers his way through this one too.

(Plus I wanted something to get us past David's long horn biker.)

I agree. I should post another video quickly before he shows himself on a horny bike.
