How much is too much?

I try and keep every shipping container as well. However, I did trash my boxes for my Def Tech speakers right after I unpacked them. The boxes were just too big to keep around and I figured I would keep these speakers *forever* anyway. Having the original shipping boxes and packing material adds to the value of every component you sell. If you have the choice of buying a component from someone who does not have the original boxes but promises to pack it well vice buying the same component from someone who has all of the original boxes, packing material, and owner's manual, which one are you going to buy assuming the condition and price are close?

agree.

Speaking of shipping containers, here are the prices Krell just gave me for new boxes for both the KBL and KSA-250:

KBL boxes-$235.00
KSA-250 box-$225.00

Total for shipping the two empty boxes:$80.00

ouch. feel your pain...i have a gryphon antileon that has been on/off for nearly 18 months...3rd time in for repair. Every time it goes in, its like death by a thousand cuts...

doubt it...shipping probably costs more...because of the insurance!!!!!

In the good old days, Krell used to pay for shipping both ways if the unit was under warranty. My KBL just completely gave up the ghost. The power supply blew a fuse. I replaced the fuse and it blew again right away. I thought that racket I was hearing from the power supply was cause for concern. I think this is going to hurt.

I would look into Pelican case. They are the real deal. When they say unbreakable .. They MEAN unbreakable. They are waterproof. dustproof, chemical proof .. well almost anything-proof. Expensive, true but reusable ad infinitum and can be used for other electronics. A case for the KSA would run you around $300 and for the KBL less than $150 .. The Key word here is re-usability.

Aren't they the cases used by the top Kimber cables? They are really sturdy.

Although I have the space to keep all the cases of almost all my equipment, I have access to a carpenter who makes custom boxes using recycled wood for around usd 150.00 for the size of the Krell KSA250. When lined with high density foam of around 1 1/2" they are really sturdy - I used some of them to ship my Sonus Faber Extrema and stands to China longtime ago.

I have access to a carpenter with great tools and no talent. This guy wouldn't know a square corner from his round head. He is the epitome of the adage that you can have speed or you can have quality, but you can't have both. He gives you speed. The dimensions you asked for will be off, and there won't be a nary a square corner to be found. Other than that, he's real good.

Mark, there are several Co's that make great shipping containers (flight cases) for Pro Gear. If you do a Google search, you can see the many different Co's. I would think that if you contacted one of them, you would be able to give them the size of the Krell and they would be able to match that to one of their existing pieces. ( BTW, the price is usually pretty reasonable) I have several cases for my guitar amps, they are pretty much the way you want to go if you are shipping electronics.
BTW, my Rowland came in a flight case when new, I still have it....pity more Co's don't use this style of case:confused: ( I suppose the cost is fairly high) however, compared to the typical cardboard box, it is superb.

This fits well with the title of the thread.

I don't feel the need to set a ceiling on prices but I am disgusted with the level of excess present in high-end audio. My own "How much is too much?" point is way below the prices of any high-end audio statement products.

Seems similar to my experience with good carpenters....
Over here in the UK they seem to take forever to do a job, but it is done right.

Mine too, Bill. That people believe they're getting anything more than the verification of the fragility of their egos from some of these items is as amazing as the prices themselves.

One of my favorites graphs is y=1/x . y =the desired improvement and x is the money spent. As x approaches infinity y appraoches zero. Assuming y equals zero is perfection you see we never get there . Once y is below on we get very small improvements as we approach infinity. However we do get improvements. The question is where do we want to stop.

The assumption behind that graph is that there is always an improvement as price goes up........

...or that all improvements cost more money.
