Taiko Audio SGM Extreme : the Crème de la Crème

Roon Update 880 has bug(s)

There is a lot of chat on the Roon Community Web Forum about serious problems

So make sure automatic updates are turned off in Roon, and do not install Build 880
That’s why I only use TAS

Really? I thought people used TAS because it sounded better than Roon. So you use TAS because Roon released an update o_O
A standing joke around here….. I haven’t used Roon Since Emile released the first Beta version of TAS. To my ears TAS trumps Roon easily. I was joking because TAS as primitive as it started has been relatively free of bugs

Excuse me if these are the most noob questions and been asked somewhere here but I have tried search and couldn’t find conclusive answer.
- How to download TAS? Tried Apple apps store but it’s not there, tried Taiko website too
- Does TAS have a feature similar to Roon Radio where the program select similar music for us?
- With TAS installed Roon would be unusable on the same system, I read this somewhere. True or false?

Thanks !

TAS is beta software and soon to be replaced by XDMS

The Extreme does not ship with Beta Software but TAS is available for Extreme owners who want to take the scale the summit of what’s possible in digital audio playback

Send an email to support@taikoaudio.com and we will email the manuals and schedule an online installation session. You will also receive an email invitation to install Apple Testflight and the TAS App

it takes about 15 - 30 minutes and it helps to have a PC or MAC laptop on the same network as the Extreme

After installing TAS, you can use the TAS App to switch back and forth between Roon and TAS

A radio feature is way down on the feature list for XDMS, Roon radio works nicely and its so easy to start roon from the TAS App, and in the upcoming XDMS App

Roon has released build 882 to fix the bug.

So, who feels this new build sounds significantly better?

Hi Emile
Roon released an update recently and it definitely improved the sound. Now, I think roon might be slightly edging out TAS when before that wasn't the case. Things sound bigger, larger, not as "forced" sounding and DEEP soundstage.
I don't know what they did but it sounds amazing now.

just did the update, cannot confirm it's 882. i suppose it must be.

Roon is better than it was and more expansive and more real sounding, closer to TAS than it was. more bass weight too. but still not quite as 'pure' sounding as TAS. not sure it's better than TAS at any of those things.

with the change over time these differences are hard to nail down. you cannot do a quick A/B. this is a quick first impression. i'd need to go back and forth a few times to get a better feel for it. and of course, no way to go back and tell the Roon upgrade differences now, just the current TAS<->Roon differences going forward.

this is the Northwest USA.

Ciao Emile, si Roon 882 suona meglio, più rilassato e silenzioso, riesci a cogliere le sfumature delle note, se suona meglio di TAS non lo so, se mi mandi l'estremo te lo posso dire.

Here's an English translation of the above: Hi Emile, yes Roon 882 sounds better, more relaxed and silent, you can grasp the nuances of the notes, if it sounds better than TAS I don't know, if you send me the extreme I can tell you.

At this moment in time I suppose comparing TAS to Roon all becomes moot in a month or so when TAS becomes permanently replaced by XDMS

So for me the question to Emile, Ed or Christiaan is NOT how TAS compares to the recent Roon update but rather how does the soon to be released XDMS compare to the new Roon build.

My bet is on XDMS. I don't believe that Emile and his team would spend the past 6 months developing XDMS as well as the money involved to do this if he didn't figure that XDMS would sound better than Roon. I am all in when it comes to Emile's path to the future. We can be certain that the Taiko team is comparing XDMS to Roon so would it be too early or just right to query Emile, Ed and the team on their perceptions of XDMS vs Roon. To my mind and my ears, that should be the logical question because TAS goes away for good in the next month or so

So is it a valid question to ask Emile now re the XDMS vs Roon comparison.

Come on Emile, a simple reply could very well "make our day" :)

I won’t be able to listen to Roon 882 till Monday. XDMS sound quality, imho, is a significant step up over TAS. Eliminating the Logitech Media Server front-end makes a substantial difference, it has been holding TAS back.

XDMS will ship with new Extremes once launched, aswell as Roon.

XDMS is about more then just sound quality though.

1) We will have something with guaruanteed performance, I’d say it will be a good thing to not be completely at the mercy of third party software.
2) We want XDMS to provide added functionality, like support for streaming services which are not supported by Roon. Ofcourse that will have to come in stages but ultimately we’d like you to be able to stream anything to the Extreme, even youtube video for example.

Hi Steve,

The way we see it, the improvement in Sound Quality of Roon is Extremely good news for both Taiko and Extreme Owners.

About 50 pct of Extreme Owners are using Roon, so they now are finally getting a long deserved uplift in SQ.

With XDMS, we are only scratching the surface of what we want to develop and implement to raise SQ to a higher level.

XDMS has the advantage of being targeted and optimized for the Extreme, whereas the Windows version of Roon has to work on a full range of different platforms with different hardware attributes, so XDMS will always have an advantageous starting point.

The good news about Roon is very much Win Win for the Extreme community

Emile will it be possible to buy Extreme only with XDMS (without Roon) and save the cost of Roon?

Well you could simply never switch to Roon. We’d preinstall both. A Roon license is not included with the Extreme so there’s no difference in the purchasing price.
