Taiko Audio SGM Extreme : the Crème de la Crème

FWIW, there are more interesting documents on the Extreme page, for instance, the USB Profile Guide and the recently added Ideal Roon Settings document, and all docs are always kept up to date.

Just got the error in the Extreme:

" There was an issue loading your database" with Roon and can't load it, as I do not find any backup of the database. Any solution other than re-installing Roon? :(
I'm sure you already tried it but just in case you have not, a restart can sometimes work miracles... Here's hoping!

I have not come across that error message before, but the latest Roon update came with a very high failed update rate (around 20%!!!). Simply re-running the roonserver64.exe installer fixed all of them though without any loss of data. Please reach out to support@taikoaudio.com for assistance.

Which build update is this associated with, Emile? Thanks.

I think he is referring to build 988...

But again, where to start?

As far as servers go, will XDMS conquer ROON, TIDAL and the like? Seems there is a lot of momentum building here for XDMS.
Regarding DACs, you may want to checkout this Brazilian reviewer - he’s the best I’ve read in terms of how much work he puts into the reviews and his knowledge — and he’s unbiased.
  • Nagra HD DAC X – 111 pontos (Estado da Arte) – German Audio – Ed.264
  • MSB Select DAC – 106 pontos (Estado da Arte) – German Audio – Ed.252
  • Nagra Tube DAC – 105 pontos (Estado da Arte) – German Audio – Ed.262
  • dCS Rossini – 100 pontos (Estado da Arte) – Ferrari Technologies – Ed.250
  • dCS Scarlatti – 100 pontos (Estado da Arte) – Ferrari Technologies – Ed.183
Regarding XDMS - if you have an Extreme, XDMS will be a no-brainer, so I think that decision is an easy one.

I don't understand, you mean go to TAS or the Taiko website
Francisco,

All you have to do is click on the links that CP provided. It takes you to the Taiko site. You don't have to go anywhere. Just click the links.

Magnificent, can someone tell me what CP is?

Ok. Thank you

I did use a Mutec for conversion from the USB/Extreme to my TotalDac but have since removed from my system. After adding a second TotalDac reclocker I felt there was a noticeable overall improvement by using the USB output from the Extreme into the first reclocker and then using the AES/EBU output into the second reclocker. YMMV.
I have the same configuration as you: usb out from the extreme to the first reclocker, and then to the second reclocker via aes-ebu.

I just realized that my Roon was not setup per the Ideal Settings PDF that’s on the Taiko website. I encourage all new owners to check that doc!

Now, the document says to use DSD over PCM, is that correct? With my Nagra DAC, I am using Native, which I believe is the best option for native DSD DACs. Can someone please confirm. Thanks.

Wouldn’t that be DAC specific? If one’s DAC supports DSD natively i would think that would be the best option.

I didn’t see that option on the screenshot you posted. Maybe the author’s DAC doesn’t support DSD natively.

The page you attached says, ". . . select the appropriate DSD transport stream according to your DAC's capabilities." So if your DAC is capable of native DSD there is no reason not to use that.

Double checking here…Should my Lampi Pacific DSD Playback Strategy be set to: Convert to PCM, Native, or DoP? Thanks!
